Tapati Guha-Thakurta is Professor in History and currently the Director of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSSC). Her two main books are The Making of a New Indian Art: Artists, Aesthetics and Nationalism in Bengal, Cambridge University Press, 1992, and Monuments, Objects,�Histories: Institutions of Art in Colonial and Postcolonial India, Columbia University Press and Permanent Black, 2004. She is also the author of several articles on the art and cultural history of modern India, and exhibition monographs.

Medicore entry into the wild cards series

If you've made it this far into the Wild Cards series then you know what these books are like. Down and Dirty was a pretty decent entry into the series but it didn't have anything that set it apart from other volumes in the series. It told a more coherent story than Aces Abroad and ramps up for the third part of the set (Ace in the Hole) but earlier entries in the series were much better.

Review - This collection of essays is a great starting point for discussing feminist Christian theology, and a necessary volume for students of theology today. Major issues and concerns are addressed by a variety of authors, each with a refreshingly unique approach. These critical reflections creatively draw on church history, politics, and theology in a way that convincingly communicates the need to rethink Christian faith and practice.

Further Comment - I do not believe one can be theologically literate today without engagement with Christian feminism. It is important, then, to have a volume to steer students into feminist theological discourse in a way that evokes reflection, discussion, and prepares for further readings on the subject. With the range of topics and voices, manageability (under 260pgs), and accessibility, I would recommend this book as such a volume.

Finally, for non-Christians interested in either anthropology of religion, interfaith dialogue, or women's spirituality, this book may have helpful insights in terms of faith keeping in late modern or late capitalist contexts, with some interesting discussion on decentering power and reconceptualizing the sacred.

Valuable Theological Essays from Feminist Perspectives

This book is a worthwhile read to both those who would and would not be likely to agree with theology promoting feminist concerns. The essays are thoughtful, intelligent and expressive of real concerns within the Christian church. The biggest drawback to the theology is in its methodological citation of the feminine perspective as being that which should govern dogma and liturgy rather the truth of God's love found in Christ (though these are surely not simply opposed, they are nonetheless distinct realities).

The therapies I am most comfortable with are Choice/Reality Therapy (Glasser) or Rational Emotive Therapy (Ellis) but use a number of other therapies as the situation calls for. The beauty of Solution Focused Therapy is how quickly one can arrive at a "safe" place for the client---but the easy flip side of that is how long-lasting will this change be. That said, a therapist (or self-help individual) will find great questions to ask others or oneself as s/he works through issues that require healing.

If you are a parent, I would highly recommend this book because it gives a new perspective and tools with which to communicate with your children. It opens up dialogue and keeps communication going during the very challenging and frustrating adolescent years. Though written for the "professional" at times, it is well worth the read and practice if you value your relationship with your children.

Best SFBT book I have found.

As a psychotherapist, I'm primarily an emotion focused and experientially based provider. But I have always seen a need for a more pragmatic arm to my work. So I have extensively researched SFBT which is my favorite secondary approach. It is essentially a humanistic approach to CBT type work and works in a much more collaborative manner than classic CBT does.

This is the most clinically helpful book out there on SFBT. The questions are indispensable. It's also one of the best introductions to all the pieces and ideas of SFBT out there. I had a conversation with the author through email and she's very knowledgeable and helpful.

Highly recommended.

One of the best

One of the best of the commentaries on 2 Chronicles, the contribution of the late Raymond Dillard, former professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia) was originally published in 1988. Twenty-five years later it remains a solid, standard contribution to the literature on this book. Written in a clear, lucid fashion that is accessible to the layperson with little prior background in the OT, it also contains significant scholarly insights that make it a cornucopia of information for the serious student of the Word. Dillard's familiarity with the geographical and the archeological background is evident, as he shares insights that make the text come alive. In addition, he does an excellent job of dealing with and explaining the differences in perspective between the author of the Chronicles and the author of 1 & 2 Kings. Technical points regarding the Hebrew text are found in the footnotes and thereby separated from the main body of the commentary.

Dillard is unabashedly conservative in his approach to Scripture, holding to a high view of its inspiration. This is an additional reason for the evangelical scholar or layperson to make use of his commentary.

The one word of caution is for those thinking of purchasing the 2 Chronicles and not 1 Chronicles in the Word Commentary series. Unlike most volumes in the series, Dillard's contains very little introductory material (other than two short essays on the material in Chs. 1-9 and Chs. 10-36). For greater detail on the background, authorship, etc. of both of these books one will need to consult the Word commentary on 1 Chronicles, which was written by Roddy Braun.

Responsible, Insightful, Thorough

The late Ray Dillard contributed an outstanding volume to the Word Biblical Commentary series. In keeping with the format of the series the commentary features a new translation by the author with textual notes; a section detailing form, structure and setting; commentary by verse; and a final explanation section which seeks to bring together all of the above for each passage. Some consider this format confusing and cumbersome; in my opinion the break down isn't terribly distracting if used well by the author.

The present volume has considerable strengths. Dillard has not looked away from the difficult historical issues raised by the text. He demonstrates an impressive familiarity with the relevant history and archeology of the Ancient Near East, the textual history of present text(s) and its interaction with the Deuteronomistic history of the Book of Kings. Difficult passages are consistently dealt with in a remarkably responsible and well balanced manner that respects the integrity of the text while admirably refusing to press unreasonable harmonizations. Dillard's linguistic skills are equally impressive. And while he has incorporated the insights of literary analysis, one gets the sense that perhaps slightly more could have been done in this area.

While Dillard's linguistic and historical skills make this commentary highly useful, it is his grasp of the overarching theological themes of Chronicles that gives the commentary it's enduring value. Dillard has clearly thought deeply about the Chronicler and his work. His appreciation of the book's theology gives the commentary an appealing coherence and leaves one with the sense of having grasped the meaning of the whole. Furthermore, Dillard thoughtfully places Chronicles within the broader context of the Christian canon finally finding the hopes of the post-exilic community fulfilled in the kingdom of God inaugurated by Christ.

Dillard's prose is well crafted. The bibliographies are helpful even if now slightly dated. The excursuses on the theology of immediate retribution and the Chronicler's presentations of Solomon, Jehoshaphat and Hezekiah are valuable treatments of those subjects. And finally, while the commentary predates the recent controversies regarding minimalist and maximalist approaches to the historical reliability of the Hebrew Bible, Dillard models an instructive reading of the text that respects both the historical and literary/theological dimensions of the text.

"This commentary makes 2 Chronicles come alive" - an apt comment of Tremper Longman III (Old Testament Commentary Survey, third edition). Indeed an outstanding commentary! I would all commentaries of the WBC series on the Old Testament were like this one - "a showcase of the best in evangelical critical scholarship" (dustjacket). Dillard has done a fine job on theology, Hebrew and historical backgrounds and he has traced
out many connections with the New Testament. Nevertheless, there is a single drawback - it is too brief!
