An Excellent Foray into the Vulkan Graphics API and Quite a Competent Book. Well Worth Reading.
By A. M. Hernandez
Learning Vulkan by Parminder Singh is an excellent foray into the Vulkan graphics API and quite a competent book. The text is a reasonable 466 pages, and packs a lot in there. Singh covers all the basics of using Vulkan and goes into great detail at each step of the way. Not only is there actual C++ code shown (a lot of it), but he explains each API call and what objects to pass it, a breakdown of each object structure and what it does, what’s valid (or invalid) for data you can put in, and so forth. I have not read the official Vulkan Programming Guide yet (that’s coming next) so I’m not able to compare them here. However, this book is an absolute treasure trove of information, and presented with clear context, not just a copy and paste of API docs.

While the book is not particularly long, the author does manage to cover a good amount of ground. Of the topics included are: getting started with the LunarG SDK, initializing the API, debugging, command buffers and memory management, allocating image resources and the swapchain, buffers, render passes, framebuffers, working with SPIR-V shaders, pipelines and pipeline state management, descriptors and push constants, and finally drawing a textured polygon. I’m still getting acquainted with Vulkan myself, but this does seem to touch on all the fundamental topics to get started with the API. It really seems like Parminder Singh knows what he is talking about and feel I learned a lot finishing this text.

One thing to keep in mind, this is not really a book about graphics programming techniques, but rather a survey of the API. Meaning, unlike Frank Luna’s DirectX books, you won’t have any cool demos to showcase at the end. Through the whole book you’re basically just working with the initialization of the Vulkan API, though you do end up with a colored triangle and finally a textured cube. This is honestly fine, and just what is needed at this point in the life of Vulkan. Flashy demos are cool, sure, but once you have the fundamentals down, it shouldn’t be hard to apply that knowledge, or port techniques from other APIs.

I will note, however, that I wish there was more discussion into the performance cost or characteristics of parts of the Vulkan API. For example, sometimes there are multiple ways to perform an action (like with uniform buffers or push constants getting data into a shader) and there wasn’t much explanation as to when to do one thing over the other. This is not a huge concern, as there are lots of articles online covering these types of things and it seems the book is there to get you familiar with the concepts and data structures to allow you to do your own research later. Certainly, I still have a lot of questions but I can’t imagine a more thorough book as an introduction to this relatively new API.

Some familiarity with older graphics APIs will probably help, but I don’t think it’s absolutely needed. In my opinion, if you are wanting to learn graphics programming today, you might as well just jump into Vulkan (or DirectX12, if you prefer) as the industry will quickly adopt these new, lower-level APIs and you will be setting yourself up for the future. Do understand, though, that Vulkan is extremely verbose and needs something like 1,000 lines of code just to get a triangle on the screen. So stark beginners may be put off by that complexity. And you should definitely have good working knowledge of C++ before getting into this. With that in mind, however, I think that Learning Vulkan by Parminder Singh is a great place to start to delve into this exciting new world of Vulkan. Well worth reading.

This the best book on Vulkan so far
By Hurricane san
This the best book on Vulkan so far, in my opinion of course. I felt my understanding on Vulkan improving a lot reading this. (Before this I had the Vulkan Programming Guide that for some reason felt like barely an improvement over the public API documents).
It may help you too.

From Beirut to Jerusalem, by Thomas L. Friedman

Winner of the 1989 National Book Award for nonfiction, this extraordinary bestseller is still the most incisive, thought-provoking book ever written about the Middle East. Thomas L. Friedman, twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting, and now the Foreign Affairs columnist on the op-ed page of the New York Times, drew on his ten years in the Middle East to write a book that The Wall Street Journal called "a sparkling intellectual guidebook... an engrossing journey not to be missed." Now with a new chapter that brings the ever-changing history of the conflict in the Middle East up to date, this seminal historical work reaffirms both its timeliness and its timelessness. "If you're only going to read one book on the Middle East, this is it." -- Seymour Hersh. "From Beirut To Jerusalem is the most intelligent and comprehensive account one is likely to read." -- New York Times Book Review.

From Publishers Weekly
"Friedman, who twice garnered the Pulitzer as a New York Times correspondent in Lebanon and Israel, further delineates the two countries in this provocative, absorbing memoir cum political and social analysis," commented PW. The work won the National Book Award.

From Library Journal
There have been any number of books that have worked hard at interpreting the melange called the Middle East. This one, however, makes a difference because it's so well written and captures the psychological mannerisms of the people of Lebanon and Israel--the first step to understanding some of the mysterious "why" that seems to elude the American public and government. Friedman's credentials are impressive: he spent six years of journalistic service for the New York Times in Beirut and Jerusalem, has won two Pulitzer prizes, and is now the Times 's chief diplomatic correspondent. His writing is vastly descriptive, incredibly illuminating, very educational, and marvelously persuasive. His advice to U.S. diplomats is that since "Middle East diplomacy is a contact sport," they must bargain as grocers, or, in other words, realize that everything has a price and the sale can always be made with enough hard work. This title is highly recommended for all libraries. See also Sandra Mackey's Lebanon: Death of a Nation , reviewed below.

Excellent beginners and experts on the region
By K. Moody
As a college student studying International Affairs, I managed to avoid the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for 4 years. I never felt like I had a fight in it, and felt the field had "too many cooks in the kitchen." I focused mostly on other regions and topics, generally aware of big picture issues with Israel, settlements, and the plight of Palestinians. I came across this book in searching for books on Syrian history for my job and decided to give it a shot, at least for the portions covering Lebanese history. I have never been a fan of Mr. Friedman's work before, but this book really is a masterpiece, and one that should be read by anyone looking to study history, the Middle East, or international affairs.

This book has almost too many good qualities to list. It is excellently nuanced and balanced, detailed enough for the expert, but explained and fast paced enough for the novice of the region. Do not be fooled by the length of the book, it is a genuine page turner, with only a few slow points, and by the end you are wishing someone would take the initiative and cover the years in depth since its printing in 1988. I was initially afraid at a book so old, afraid I would be missing newly found information unavailable at the time of writing, but unfortunately the region, particularly Lebanon and Syria, isn't covered much even by scholars.

Mr. Friedman is passionate about the topic, to be sure, but as he notes, true friends are honest with each other. Having lived in Beirut for a number of years, and then moving to Jerusalem, he has friends on both sides of the situation, but isn't afraid to discuss issues for a real and lasting peace. The biggest issue, for both sides, seemed to be a misunderstanding of the other group. While some Palestinians viewed the Israelis as a minor blip in time on the land, who would eventually surrender the land and leave forever, the Israelis viewed the Palestinians under the umbrella of "Arabs" who would be at home anywhere, refusing to distinguish between an Arab in Egypt and an Arab in Iraq. Leadership, or lack of it, fed into those beliefs. Both sides lacked bold leadership, as neither led from the front, but rather led from the polls. Instead of making bold initiatives toward peace, both felt that time was on their side, when it obviously only made the divisions deeper. In the rare case where leaders did make bold moves (Sadat), they were taken out by their own group, making it even more difficult to lead from the front.

While the time in Beirut was the most interesting to me, his chapter on religion in Israel is really eye opening. We Americans tend to see other countries in generally black and white (West Germany good, East Germany bad) and forget that not all Israeli Jews are the same. The way Friedman goes into this topic is supremely interesting and profound, and something American Jews should certainly look at and discuss.

It is something of a miracle that this book was written, on a region that is so often overlooked. With such an important topic, I'll take away everything bad I ever said about Mr. Friedman. My only regret on this book is that I did not read it earlier. This book is great for someone with very little information on the region or the expert on the region. Read it as soon as you can.

It is tragic that impartial observers like Tom Friedman seem to be ignored by our government ...
By Joseph A Bonales
I hope that all the members of Congress, the Military, the Special Interest/Lobbies read this insightful body of work. It is tragic that impartial observers like Tom Friedman seem to be ignored by our government and by many others, as well. The die is cast, so to speak, and now we have to thank the likes of George Bush and his cronies for further inflaming the Middle East. I wonder if any of them even attempted to read/understand this book. I doubt it. Empires and emperors are usually blinded by their own magnificence. I recommend Tom Friedman's magnificent work. It's a different spin on the word. Let's be optimistic, pro-active, and strive for a lasting peace between Israel, the Palestinians, and all others enmeshed in this "continuum". I'd like to see the next chapter be one recounting the progress being made, and not another account of violence and reprisals.

Fabulous journalism...

Tom Friedman writes a balanced, horrifying and sometimes even (absurdly) humorous memoir of his time in war-torn Lebanon and in Israel during the two intifadas. The insanity that prevails in the Middle East unfortunately taught the world nothing as US adventurism-again based on no understanding of these cultures whatsoever-has exacerbated the situation even further as has the widening of the Shiite-Sunni tribalism, this time in the guise of ISIS-and of course the Palestinian-Israeli conflict which has now become apartheid redux. When will we ever learn?

A Call to Prayer, by J C Ryle, John Charles Ryle, JC Ryle

This book is Bishop Ryle’s clarion call for the careless believer lax about prayer. It is characteristically warm, and readable— but poignantly urgent. Prayerlessness was a problem in Bishop Ryle’s day, but it is endemic in ours. Almost no one is passionate about prayer anymore, swept up in the activities of life, sports, entertainment, and myriad diversions. This work is a potent remedy for spiritual apathy and weak Christianity. If you heed Ryle’s advice, your walk with the Lord will be energized by an infusion of vitality and spiritual power you never imagined would be possible.

About the Author
John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool. Ryle was born at Macclesfield, and was educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he was Craven Scholar in 1836. After holding a curacy at Exbury in Hampshire, he became rector of St Thomas's, Winchester (1843), rector of Helmingham, Suffolk (1844), vicar of Stradbroke (1861), honorary canon of Norwich (1872), and dean of Salisbury (1880). However before taking the latter office, he was advanced to the new see of Liverpool, where he remained until his resignation, which took place three months before his death at Lowestoft. His appointment to Liverpool was at the recommendation of the outgoing Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Ryle was a strong supporter of the evangelical school and a critic of Ritualism. He was a writer, pastor and an evangelical preacher. Among his longer works are Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century (1869), Expository Thoughts on the Gospels (7 vols, 1856–69), Principles for Churchmen (1884). Ryle was an athlete who rowed and played Cricket for Oxford, where he took a first class degree in Greats and was offered a college fellowship (teaching position) which he declined. The son of a wealthy banker, he was destined for a career in politics before choosing a path of ordained ministry. While hearing Ephesians 2 read in church in 1838, he felt a spiritual awakening and was ordained by Bishop Sumner at Winchester in 1842. For 38 years he was a parish vicar, first at Helmingham and later at Stradbrooke, in Suffolk. He became a leader of the evangelical party in the Church of England and was noted for his doctrinal essays and polemical writings. In 1880, at age 64, he became the first bishop of Liverpool, at the recommendation of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. He retired in 1900 at age 83 and died later the same year. He is buried in the All Saints' Church, Childwall, Liverpool. In his diocese, he formed a clergy pension fund for his diocese and built over forty churches. Controversially, he emphasized raising clergy salaries ahead of building a cathedral for his new diocese. Ryle was described as having a commanding presence and vigorous in advocating his principles albeit with a warm disposition. He was also credited with having success in evangelizing the blue collar community.

Challenging, encouraging - great read!
By Dan Panetti
A most outstanding book and excellent read. Ryle was the Bishop of Liverpool in the late 1700s and his writing is alive with the Word of God and the intensity of the Puritans. This little salvo is a challenge to all to pray - to those who don't know the Lord to cry out for God's mercy and redemption and for those who do to cry out for God's continued hand of protection and provision in their own lives as well as for His grace and mercy in the lives of others. Ryle is straightforward in his approach on this subject asking repeatedly and simply - Do You Pray?

Yet he goes beyond the question to the meat of the issue giving strong arguments for why prayer, the most neglected duty in religion according to Ryle, is so necessary for the spiritual well-being of an individual. Once he has made his point, and made it well, Ryle turns his attention to how a person should pray. This work of prayer, according to Ryle, is so often neglected because it is such an arduous task cutting against the flesh and standing (or kneeing in this case) in direct opposition and defiance of Satan himself. Ryle encourages the Christian to pray with reverence and humility, spiritually, as a regular part of their business of life, with all perseverance, in earnestness, in faith, with boldness, with fullness, on behalf of others, with thankfulness and with watchfulness over one's prayers. He writes this to state his position on the importance of prayer: "Tell me what a man's prayers are, and I will soon tell you the state of his soul. Prayer is the spiritual pulse."

I am gaining in my appreciation for the works of J.C. Ryle - wonderfully written, challenging, yet encouraging to the heart of a true follower of Christ. Here is a man that walked with the Lord in humility and with passion and reading his works must be Timothy getting a letter from Paul. I would highly recommend A Call to Prayer to anyone wanting to know why to pray or how to pray.

Direct and Practical
By Zecheriah
In this short booklet, Ryle charges the reader with the necessity of prayer. He cuts through the excuses and the pretense with the simple question: "Do you pray?" Ryle's style is concise and immanently readable. He argues that prayer or the lack of prayer is the single greatest barometer for a person's status before the Lord. For "[t]o be prayerless is to be without Christ, without God, without grace, without hope, and without heaven," (p.2).

"exhortation"
By Michael S. Sanchez
I am very thankful for having read a call to prayer by J.C. Ryle. Ryle is Bold, encouraging, and affectionate in his earnest invitation for all children of God to come before Him in prayer. Prayer is crucial in the life of the believer and it is evidence that one has been born from above as Ryle mentioned. I agree completely with Ryle when he says that prayer is the most neglected duty in the church because I am evidence of this charge. I pray, but I don not really pray as Ryle would say.

To consider how we in the new covenant have direct access to God is overwhelming and humbling. Men of old could have only dreamed of such access but we have the privilege and we must take advantage of it. To be allowed to speak with the living God of the Universe is beyond comprehension and to recognize my negligence in my communing with Him is heartbreaking.

Ryle has greatly encouraged and challenged my prayer life and communion with my God. I know I do not pray like men in the Bible or great men in church history butit is my hearts desire to pray in this way. I want to know the Godhead intimately and prayer is the means to the throne of grace. It is necessary that I give more time to prayer knowing that prayer is one of the means of grace God has blessed those whom he has
adopted with. Ryle has encouraged me to pray with reverence, humility, perseverance and earnestness, in faith, in boldness, on behalf of others, with thankfulness, and watchfulness.

The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant Mainline, by Elesha J. Coffman

The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant Mainline offers the first full-length, critical study of The Christian Century, widely regarded as the most influential religious magazine in America for most of the twentieth century and hailed by Time as "Protestantism's most vigorous voice."

Elesha Coffman narrates the previously untold story of the magazine, exploring its chronic financial struggles, evolving editorial positions, and often fractious relations among writers, editors, and readers, as well as the central role it played in the rise of mainline Protestantism. Coffman situates this narrative within larger trends in American religion and society. Under the editorship of Charles Clayton Morrison from 1908-1947, the magazine spoke out about many of the most pressing social and political issues of the time, from child labor and women's suffrage to war, racism, and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. It published such luminaries as Jane Addams, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Martin Luther King Jr. and jostled with the Nation, the New Republic, and Commonweal, as it sought to enlarge its readership and solidify its position as the voice of liberal Protestantism. But by the 1950s, internal strife between liberals and neo-orthodox and the rising challenge of Billy Graham's evangelicalism would shatter the illusion of Protestant consensus. The coalition of highly educated, theologically and politically liberal Protestants associated with the magazine made a strong case for their own status as shepherds of the American soul but failed to attract a popular following that matched their intellectual and cultural clout.

Elegantly written and persuasively argued, The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant Mainline takes readers inside one of the most important religious magazines of the modern era.

Review

"[An] outstanding history of The Christian Century..." --John Turner, George Mason University

"Ms. Coffman's research has uncovered a great deal of material about the rise and decline of mainline Protestantism, and she tells its story well..." --Barton Swaim, Wall Street Journal

"[An] elegantly crafted and subtly witty account... [Coffman] makes a theoretically sophisticated contribution to the growing scholarship on religious media in the postwar United States." --The Christian Century Take and Read

"The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant Mainline is happily distinguished by its sustained attention to the character and dynamics of the great gap between an educated elite and a mass population of churchgoers." --The Christian Century

"A fascinating, well-documented tale." --CHOICE

"Far more than the history of a magazine, Elesha Coffman's elegant, insightful book shows how The Christian Century grew from obscure beginnings as a Disciples of Christ publication to become the most enduring icon of liberal Protestantism. For anyone sympathetic to the ecumenical vision of the Protestant mainline, Coffman's tale makes for poignant, even haunting, reading. Her account also demolishes the recent scholarly fashion of dismissing mainline Protestantism as lifeless or irrelevant. An essential volume for historians and church people alike." -- Peter J. Thuesen, Professor of Religious Studies and Department Chair, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

"America's religious history travels, to a great extent, along the networks that religious media provide. Anyone who is interested in this story needs to know about The Christian Century, one of the greatest national Protestant conversation starters of the twentieth century. Elesha Coffman has written a sensitive and often witty account of The Century's first half-century, and it has much to tell us about the rise and decline of mainline Protestantism." -- Joel Carpenter, Professor of History and Director of the Nagel Institute for the Study of World Christianity, Calvin College

"Elesha Coffman provides an illuminating portrait of The Christian Century in the days when it was in its prime. She recounts evenhandedly and with insight its strengths and weaknesses, its identity crises, aspirations, accomplishments, and controversies as the leading liberal voice in the Protestant establishment." -- George Marsden, Professor of History Emeritus, University of Notre Dame

"Not only does Coffman show that the Century itself mattered in defining the mainline, but that the Protestant establishment was not simply a historical given. Establishments can be hard to explore, precisely because, almost by definition, they present themselves as given and inevitable. Yet as Coffman argues, the Protestant establishment was not a given but a historically contingent creation of an elite group of (almost exclusively) well-educated white men... Coffman's work, then, gives us insight into the complicated nature of today's Protestant mainline." -- Sarah E. Rule, Associate Professor of Religion at Gustavus Adolphus College

A Magazine More Important than Its Numbers Suggest
By Rev. C. Bryant
The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant Mainline reads a bit like a PhD thesis, which it well may be. Whether it is or isn't, Elesha Coffman has plowed relatively new ground. The Christian Century has been around in at least a couple of forms since the 1880's, and it is well-known among well-educated, relatively progressive Protestant ministers. Unfortunately, such folks constitute almost the entire clientele of the magazine, and it is this upon which Coffman hinges her narrative. There are millions of Christians in the United States, and the Century has managed, at most, to attract around 30,000 of them as subscribers (it's impossible to tell how many issues may be read in libraries). The vision of the Century has been, and is, ecumenical and global. Century editors supported the development of the Federal Council of Churches (later National Council), the World Council of Churches, and other efforts which transcended the narrow interests of denominations and congregations. Given the normal tendency of the latter to focus on their own interests, in would be surprising if a magazine so dedicated could garner much of a following. This is too bad, but it offers some important learnings for those of us pastors who, by virtue of training and temperament, qualify as Century subscribers.

First of all, the Century began as a publication deeply rooted in the publishing traditions of the Stone-Campbell movement, the most obvious manifestation of which is the modern denomination known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Under the leader of Disciple Charles Clayton Morrison, the magazine pressed the Disciples plea for a Christianity that was rational, ecumenical, and mission-focused. Though the Disciples no longer emphasize these things so much, there is still very much a place for them in the life of American Protestantism. This is why the modern Century advertises itself as an ecumenical journal that takes seriously the role of rationality in the faith and mission of Christians.

Second, if there was any doubt before, Coffman's narrative makes clear the overwhelming influence of conservative, even Fundamentalist, Christianity in the United States. If there had been any doubt, the incredible success of Billy Graham beginning in the 1950's and the rise of the Century's rival, Christianity Today, around that time removes it. Billy Graham is considered one of the greatest Americans of all time, while Martin Marty is a hero to few. That CT occasionally asks permission to quote CC stories does not obscure its essentially antithetical position vis a vis its Chicago-based rival. The circulation of CT has always hugely outstripped that of CC, simply because conservative Christians, led by pastors with educations far removed from the university-based divinity schools favored by my generation, overwhelmingly outnumber its readers.

Third, the minority status of progressive, or "liberal," Christianity in the United States definitely limits its influence--but so has the fact that it has not always spoken with a unified voice. The obvious example Coffman cites is the falling-out between Reinhold Niebuhr and Morrison in the twenties. Niebuhr turned down an invitation to become Morrison's second-in-command and eventually went on sharply to criticize liberal Christians for what he considered naivete in the face of the persistence of sin and evil. Niebuhr even founded his own magazine, Christianity and Crisis, to speak with what he considered to be a more realistic tone toward the issues of the day. ( By the 1980's, when I was submitting articles to both magazines, I found C&C's editorial response to be muddled and unfocused. Not long after, the magazine folded.)

It is beyond the focus of Coffman's book to provide answers for these questions/dilemmas. That's for those of us who embrace the progressive label. She ends her narrative at 1960 because, she says, that was the time that the Protestant mainline began to decline. She may be right, but other writers, such as Richard Hamm, have placed the date closer to 1970. At any rate, the history of CC since, say, 1980, deserves another book. In 2013, it is both true to its roots and very different.

Coffman's work is a remarkable piece of scholarship. She not only plowed through unimaginable stacks of copy. She also describes the idea of the mainline in a way no one has yet done, in a way that should influence all future conversation of the mainline and of evangelicals in this country. It's a reminder of what historical scholarship is supposed to be: it's curious, it does its homework, it offers judgments but not too frequently, it is lucidly or even brilliantly written. One can see Coffman's previous work as a journalist on display. She tells us everything we want to know. And it all started with a simple question from a prelim examiner: "How did the mainline become mainline?" It is remarkable no one had thought to ask that question. The mainline has always been a matter of cultural cache more than numerical success or a hierarchical superchurch offering marching orders to obedient masses. It has fought for an ecumenical church (born from its early days as a Disciples of Christ publication), a progressive politics, an engagement with scholarship. It has gained more prestige from university-trained writers and readers than the political and cultural operatives for which it has longed. I just take as true her use of Alasdair MacIntyre's definition of a tradition as a socially embodied argument over time about the goods inherent to the tradition.

The Christian Century and the Rise of the Protestant Mainline
By tony seel
This work is a study of The Christian Century (TCC) magazine and the Protestant Mainline of the United States up to 1960. It chronicles the history of The Christian Century, including the journal's constant battle with financial viability.

The Christian Century began in 1884 as The Christian Oracle, a publication of the Disciples of Christ denomination. It was renamed The Christian Century in 1892. It was on December 6, 1917 that The Christian Century officially declared itself "An Undenominational Journal of Religion." With the advent of Christianity Today in 1956, TCC envisioned a "great struggle for the soul of American Protestantism" as well as a "great struggle to win the soul of America."

The term "mainline" came into use in the 1960s and was used to denote seven denominations that constituted the moderate to liberal wing of American Protestantism. 1960 was chosen for the end of this study because the author traces the decline of the mainline to that year.

I found this book fair and informative and would recommend it.

Review
'I think the addition of John McCormick to the team is an excellent idea. I know his scholarship better than his textbooks, but he is a clear writer with huge textbook experience this is a good book that is going to get better' Craig Parsons, University of Oregon, USA'This is one of, if not the, most comprehensive introductory comparative textbook(s) currently on the market, and this new edition retains all of the strongest features of previous editions.' - James Allan, Wittenberg University, USA'Once again (and now with John McCormick on board) this classic introductory comparative politics text manages to stay relevant, accessible and contemporary. It remains the key text for students new to comparative politics, mixing theoretical clarity with expert country case studies throughout.' Mark Bennister, Canterbury Christchurch University, UK'The reordering of the chapters fits better with how I teach my comparative politics class I will continue to use this text when I teach comp pols.' Jennifer Curtin, University of Auckland, NZ'The book remains, as it has for many years, one of the leading texts for first year undergraduates trying to understand the main features of comparative politics It remains a classic text' Stephen Thornton, Cardiff University, UK'I am delighted to see that John McCormick is joining Hague and Harrop. I am very familiar with his writing, having used his EU textbooks in my teaching for many years. He manages to get the most important points across, even on challenging subjects, like the EU, in a comprehensive, yet clear way.' Thomas Lundberg, University of Glasgow, UK'Overall, as should by now be abundantly clear, I am very impressed with the proposed changes; they would make an already excellent introductory text an outstanding one, and Prof. McCormick has clearly put a great deal of thought into his suggestions. I feel that, as an assessor, I should be more critical; but I really did find myself nodding in agreement with almost all the proposed changes. I would certainly use this book for teaching, and I know many others would too.' Leslie Holmes, University of Melbourne, Australia"

The Holocaust in Latvia 1941-1944. Andrew Ezergailis
By Karin Standen
I consider that Andrew Ezergailis demonstrates in this history that he is a very objective, thorough historian. All conclusions are soundly based and documented. He destroys the arguments of many of the revisionist historians by quoting much that was reported from the Eastern front in reports to the high command in Berlin. He shows that it is inconceivable that the instructions to carry out the atrocities did not effectively come right from the top, Adolph Hitler,Himmler and Heydrich. I found a weakness in the history and the conclusions that Ezergailis sits on the fence with respect to the culpability of the Latvians themselves. He appears inhibited by his own Latvian background, although the facts he has unearthed show that the Latvians themselves bear a heavy responsibility for the murder of the Jews. He seems unwilling to draw the conclusions, which his own research has in fact made clear. This was disappointing, though in many ways understandable. The value of the work is that it also prepares the ground for further historical research on this tragic episode in Latvian history. Michael Standen.

Review
By Stephen Campbell
To the best of my knowledge this is the only book written about the Holocaust in Latvia, and in English, that was written through extensive research of existing source documents. That alone makes it worth reading.

This book gives the best description of the Arajis Kommando, and its leader, that I have read. The author describes the role of fraternities in Latvia and how Arajis used his connections inside one of the largest for recruiting purposes. Arajis comes off as yet another self-seeking power and recognition hungry flea that decided to catch a ride on the hyena that was the Reich.

What puzzled me was the authors insistence that Latvian auxillaries were the primary killers of the Jews and members of the communist party. My reading of this book left me somewhat doubtful as the author discusses how the Arajis Kommando was slow to organize that fateful summer. Also, Latvian auxillaries were not trusted with weapons other than rifles and pistols (pre 1943) and the ammo issued was counted before an after they were on duty.

I have no doubt that Latvians killed Jews and the Arajis Kommando helped. I am just not as positive as the author they killed as many of them. Yet, I write this and know I never would have even thought about it without the author having written this book. For me, this is why I read, and why I like history so much.

The book also discusses the clash between those who wanted (Lohse)to wring the maximum amount of productive labor from selected Jews and those who wanted to kill them all now (SD). The same clash was repeated through out the east and I found it interesting to read the logic behind it. Something few books touch upon.

I recommend this book.

A hard but unbiased look-- frank, thorough and surprising
By A Customer
Ezergailis' account of holocaust in Latvia is based on his analysis of German, Latvian, and Soviet sources, the latter just made available when he wrote his book. He describes the position of the Jews in pre War Latvia, the attitude of the government toward the Jews, and the rise of antisemitism in certain segments of what was then "a Jewish friendly state." Ezegailis also details the fate of the Jews in sobering passages in which he names those responsible for their deaths. He analyzes how the Nazis used their propaganda to enlist Latvian participation and where this worked. He also discusses how the Soviets used a similar line to discredit Latvian nationalists and ironically, how many American Latvians bought those arguments. To paraphrase the author, the Jews and the Latvians were stuck between two devils. The Latvians chose one; the Jews chose another.
I have traveled through the country several times to meet Latvians and Latvian Jews who survived the War. In a few cases, I have spoken to actual witnesses both in Riga, the capital, and in the rural areas of the country. I think I am in a position to comment on Ezegailis' book. It is a thorough work of scholarship for anyone interested in that sad time and the complex world it left.
