Paul Anka’s first hit, “Diana,” came in 1957, when he was 16. He was just a kid, but so were many of his contemporaries: Frankie Lymon, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers. Anka had five hits in a single year, 1958, and he was among the top acts of the late 1950s and early ’60s, but then something happened that could have ended his career: the Beatles. Anka wisely changed course, focusing on songwriting, but for an older audience, turning out the theme for Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, Sinatra’s monster hit “My Way,” and Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady,” while still performing in Vegas and occasionally coming up with a hit of his own (“(You’re) Having My Baby”). Poorly written, poorly edited

A meandering and mean-spirited book that the world could truly do without. I bought it not because I am a fan of Anka's, but to read about how his career intersected with others'. What I got was a book that meandered all over the place with no chronological thought, almost no detail except on truly juvenile pranks he played on others even as an adult and incredible repetitiveness that any half-skilled editor should have caught and sent back for a rewrite. Egotistical, mean-spirited and boring. Don't waste your money or your time.

What a disappointment

This memoir started out to be promising but soon degenerated into a conceited, sordid mess. Endless ramblings about the rat pack, the mafia, needless mean spirited tattling (he claims to be a friend to Sammy Davis jr but I sure hope Sammy's kids don't pick this up thinking Uncle Paul would say nice things.)

Another singer who left his faithful wife after a zillion years, what a guy. Glad I didn't push out 5 babies for him. And then let's whine about wife 2....

An egotistical jerk, Too bad I'll think that every time I hear one of his songs from now on. A complete waste of money.

Change Agent Training in 1976

I went through Havelock's training in 1976 during which we were given this book as a text book.
The training instructed us on how to "identify the resisters in our community" and how to co-opt important members of the community (members of Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Garden and Historical Clubs, etc.) into supporting the values-destroying programs coming out of what would subsequently become my office in the U.S. Dept. of Education during the first Reagan Administration (the Office of Educational Research and Improvement). These programs were responsible for destroying our children's values regarding sex, drugs, death, etc. I have an article regarding Death Education written in the Guidance Counsellor's journal which basically says all those programs were developed to do just the opposite of what parents were told. In other words "to create the problems with sex, drugs, etc." Very, very interesting. Ronald Havelock is no friend of parents or teachers, in my opinion. However, I do recommend this book highly if anyone wants to understand what the "real" purpose of all the programs with education hanging off the end of them is about. If one wants to change teachers into facilitators of brainwashing to destroy our culture, this is the book to buy. I'd give it not five but TEN stars. I"m giving it one star since I HATE this book. Many teachers fortunately resisted this forced training they had to endure!

Writtn by practical people, this is a users guide to making change happen in the community, both as an "inside " or "outside"
change agent. This book helps define both rolls,and suggests defining the community which the indvidual or group is attempting to work with. I have used this with great success in a large bueracratic organization outside the field of education with great success

Required book for speech class.

I do not care for this book. Mostly I just disagree with the information in this book which I do not feel is very scientific. It sounds more like a whining self help book. I cannot recall any particular examples but I was annoyed by some very vague and unhelpful metaphors the author used, which again sounded like jibber jabber rather than some hard scientific principle I should be learning. The book is not difficult to read and appears to be well laid out, perhaps it is just the material I do not care for.

Jane Kamerling, L.C.S.W. is a Diplomate Jungian Analyst and member of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts and Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts. She is a faculty member of the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago and has designed and co-directed the Clinical Training is a senior analyst who has lectured both nationally and internationally on the relationship of Jungian psychology to culture, mythology and religion. She has a full time analytical practice in Chicago. Fred R. Gustafson, D. Min. is a Diplomate Jungian Analyst (Zurich) and member of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts. He is a senior training analyst with the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago and a clergy member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on subjects related to Analytical Psychology and religion. Easy is East and West is West - or is it?

Jane Kamerling and Fred Gustafson are two Jungian analysts who have taken the time and energy to address the ever-growing misconceptions between the cultural/religious dichotomies of the Western and Islamic worlds, misconceptions that seem to be driving us closer to all out widespread combat. And there really is no reason for this perception as the core of the spiritual beliefs (often ignored by both realms of people) is essentially the same message as these two scholars make obvious. Yes, a background in Jungian psychology helps the reader fully appreciate the development of ideas presented here, but both of these authors make it a point to explain the various aspects of Jungian psychology in easy to grasp explanations - a courtesy to the reader that makes this book far more universal in appeal than others who have attempted the same examination.

In the long introduction to their book they lead us into their thought processes: 'History provided the cultural conditioning which forms individual and cultural identity. In Jung's psychology, anything that threatens or conflicts with that ego position, whether it is the ego identity of an individual or a nation is called the shadow. The content of the shadow is mostly unknown and includes all the ideas and concepts that seem foreign and threatening to the ego or its identity. When the ego is threatened by the contents of the shadow, this content is projected outside of oneself onto another. The object of the projection is known as "the Other." "The Other" becomes a magnet for uncomfortable shadow projections casting all the negative darkness onto an unknown foreign, place, or culture. Having a historical knowledge reduces the possibility of projecting shadow. History reveals common themes across cultures, emphasizing humanity's similarities.' And later they go on to say 'This book hopes to direct our attention towards gaining that awareness. First...we will try to give a concise overview of history that is relevant to the issues of today. Included is the making and falling of nations, the development of Islam and the economic influence as the world interconnects through the pressure of globalization. We introduce a psychological framework, described by Carl Jung, in which to view the individual within the world and then expand that paradigm by explaining the psychology of collective groups and societies. Using symbols that are bigger than life and that hold collective psychologies, we try to illustrate the dynamics presently being played out between East and West. The book dances between archetypal images that express our common emotional views and experiences, on the one hand, and the facts that surround and feed the archetypal manifestations on the other.' "It is easier to see shadowy political machinations in the Middle East, for example, than to struggle with the same issues in the West.'

From this overview the authors address misconceptions that few understand. In a chapter dealing with the dress of Islamic women we discover the concept behind the veil form the instruction of Muhammad to today, since that appears to be a signal of repression of women to Western perception. 'Western attitudes identify the attire of Muslim women as an expression of repression, oppression, and male dominance by a backward and primitive people. This book uses the veil as a metaphor of the unseen influences that affect both the actual oppression and abuse of women worldwide as well as repression of unconscious material. Though the veil is literally worn by women in the Islamic world, this book emphasizes that the oppression of the feminine resides in both East and West. The veil, as a garment, is not the issue, but what it has come to represent in the West through Western misunderstanding and misinterpretation.'

It is this genuinely concerned approach to erase misconceptions 'between' and instead look at the greater collective thinking that unites us all that the authors find their greatest success. In addition to all the opening of windows shuttered by mutual misunderstanding, another aspect of this valuable book as an open dialogue about the history of the world's religions and a very fine glossary of the terms about Eastern thought that clarifies many misconceptions. "Lifting the Veil" is an ambitious, thoughtful examination of the veil worn by Muslim women as a symbol for the tensions between the Middle East and the West. Kamerling and Gustafson provide a succinct, carefully researched history of Islam followed by a survey of the many underlying causes for the cultural complexes that threaten to possess both Islam and the West. The authors extend the idea of a complex in Jungian Psychology to the realm of a complex affecting an entire culture. They use the figure of Sheherazade, the woman who tells "One Thousand and One" stories over as many nights that ultimately proves to be the deliverance for two kings caught in the throes of the repressed feminine. Sheharazde becomes the vessel through which the feminine is unleashed and "Lifting the Veil" proposes that we must once again recover the life-affirming qualities of the repressed feminine if we are to overcome the cultural complexes that have divided Islam and the West.

As close to a How-To Guide as you're going to get.....

This book is pretty close to being a how to guide. Coach Gozansky has thought of just about everything that is relevant to running a good volleyball program. This is not to say that you need to follow the book word for word, but she has set out a lot of information on issues that most people would not have thought of when they start coaching.
The technical section of the skills and strategy are pretty reasonable. But since I am a believer in the nuances of the game, I can't abide by learning the game by the book. You really have to be a observer and a student of the game in order to gain the necessary nuances in order to be a good game coach. So I don't believe that any book on skill is ever adequate. However, everything else mentioned in this book is very good. This is a great reference book for someone who want to build a program, whether it is in the colleges or in high school. The information set forth are pragmatic and reasonable, the presentation clear and concise.
I would recommend this highly to any coach, including club coaches.

Like everything else related to the election

This is a short Kindle-Single follow-up of sorts to Jon Ronson’s Them!, which was published in 2000 and featured, among other extremists, Infowars’ Alex Jones, who at the time wasn’t really well-known outside of fringe conspiracy theory circles. These days, Jones is a national figure as one of the voices of the “alt-right” movement driving Donald Trump’s presidential run – Trump is on record as a fan of Jones, who arguably started the whole “Hillary For Prison” meme. Ronson reconnected with Jones at the Republican National Convention in hopes of accessing Trump. He didn’t, but Ronson did spend time with Jones, Trump advisor Roger Stone and alt-right Trump fans – and this is the result. Like everything else related to the election, your opinion of this will largely depend on how hardcore and partisan your political views are and how much what Ronson wrote differs from what you wanted him to write. Personally, I liked it – as with Them!, Ronson has an uncanny and important ability to get to the humanity of his subjects without painting them as conveniently cartoonish characters. (In fact, Ronson argues that the Left has inadvertently galvanized the alt-right in part by doing just that.) At under 50 pages it’s not comprehensive by any means, but it’s a good snapshot of the influence of the alt-right on Trump’s campaign and the chaos and madness that has manifested on both sides of the aisle.
