Samuel Beckett and the End of Modernity, by Richard Begam

This study explores the relation between Samuel Beckett s five major novels Murphy, Watt, Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable and the phenomenon that Lyotard, Habermas, and Vattimo have described as the end of modernity. Through close readings of Beckett s pentalogy, the author shows how these novels, written between 1935 and 1950, strikingly anticipate many of the defining themes and ideas of Barthes, Foucault, and Derrida from madness and the cogito to the death of the author and the end of the book, from diffZrance and unnamability to the end of man and the beginning of writing. The book begins by situating Beckett in relation to a postmodern philosophical tradition, largely defined by Nietzsche and Heidegger, and a modern literary tradition, most notably represented by Proust and Joyce. The author argues against the tendency to treat the postmodern as the negation of Enlightenment thinking, a form of overcoming in which the modern is replaced by the anti-modern. In the place of this antithetical postmodernism, the author proposes a diffZrantial postmodernism. Especially important in this regard is Derrida s claim that there is never any question of choosing between modernity (what he calls Western metaphysics) and some term of opposition (the overcoming of metaphysics). Rather, Derrida recommends practicing a new writing which simultaneously brings together two kinds of deconstruction one that works critically within the tradition and one that projects itself imaginatively beyond the tradition.

Gatecrashing Europe, by Kris Mole

In 2007, Kris Mole flew one-way to Stockholm with a vow not to return home to England until he had visited every capital city in the mainland European Union. He set himself eight simple rules, most importantly A) that no money would be spent or handled during the journey, and B) no credit cards would be used either. Thus, the great Euro Freebie Challenge began: twenty-three cities to be visited, 6000 miles to be covered, without spending a single penny on the journey – to raise money, in fact, for Cancer Research UK.

The colourful story of this six-month trip was first told by charismatic, wise-cracking, semi-anti-hero Kris via a series of blogs, and followed by readers of The Daily Mail, The Telegraph and the BBC website. Readers found Kris drawing on his formidable resourcefulness to acquire all of life's necessities for free, resting wherever he could find a place, and travelling by foot, hitch-hiking, or stowing away on trains – experiencing, as you might expect, a wild emotional ride in the process.

August 2015 marks the first appearance of this epic journey in book form, with the author donating 10% of his royalties to Cancer Research UK.

Unusually Inspiring

Whether or not you agree with his method, or would want to travel this way yourself, the message of the book is this: Go out and experience the world and you will learn.

This guy's ability to subject himself to the whims of others astounds me. He's brave; he's daring; he's a young guy throwing himself into life.

This book probably won't be about your life but will inspire you to look at your own life. In the end you'll be asking yourself: How can I get more out of my journey?

A Universe from Nothing: Why There Is Something Rather than Nothing, by Lawrence M. Krauss

Bestselling author and acclaimed physicist Lawrence Krauss offers a paradigm-shifting view of how everything that exists came to be in the first place.

“Where did the universe come from? What was there before it? What will the future bring? And finally, why is there something rather than nothing?”

One of the few prominent scientists today to have crossed the chasm between science and popular culture, Krauss describes the staggeringly beautiful experimental observations and mind-bending new theories that demonstrate not only can something arise from nothing, something will always arise from nothing. With a new preface about the significance of the discovery of the Higgs particle, A Universe from Nothing uses Krauss’s characteristic wry humor and wonderfully clear explanations to take us back to the beginning of the beginning, presenting the most recent evidence for how our universe evolved—and the implications for how it’s going to end.

Provocative, challenging, and delightfully readable, this is a game-changing look at the most basic underpinning of existence and a powerful antidote to outmoded philosophical, religious, and scientific thinking.

From Booklist
Theoretical physicist Krauss, author of several books about physics, including The Physics of Star Trek (1995), admits up front that he is not “sympathetic to the conviction that creation requires a creator.” The book isn’t exclusively an argument against divine creation, or intelligent design, but, rather, an exploration of a tantalizing question: How and why can something—the universe in which we live, for example—spring from nothing? It’s an evolutionary story, really, taking us back to the Big Bang and showing how the universe developed over billions of years into its present form. Sure to be controversial, for Krauss does not shy away from the atheistic implications of a scientifically explainable universe, the book is full of big ideas explained in simple, precise terms, making it accessible to all comers, from career physicists to the lay reader whose knowledge of the field begins and ends with a formula few understand, E=mc. --David Pitt

Review
"In A Universe from Nothing, Lawrence Krauss has written a thrilling introduction to the current state of cosmology—the branch of science that tells us about the deep past and deeper future of everything. As it turns out, everything has a lot to do with nothing—and nothing to do with God. This is a brilliant and disarming book."-- Sam Harris, author of The Moral Landscape

"Astronomers at the beginning of the twentieth century were wondering whether there was anything beyond our Milky Way Galaxy. As Lawrence Krauss lucidly explains, astronomers living two trillion years from now, will perhaps be pondering precisely the same question! Beautifully navigating through deep intellectual waters, Krauss presents the most recent ideas on the nature of our cosmos, and of our place within it. A fascinating read."

-- Mario Livio, author of Is God A Mathematician? and The Golden Ratio

"In this clear and crisply written book, Lawrence Krauss outlines the compelling evidence that our complex cosmos has evolved from a hot, dense state and how this progress has emboldened theorists to develop fascinating speculations about how things really began."
-- Martin Rees, author of Our Final Hour

“A series of brilliant insights and astonishing discoveries have rocked the Universe in recent years, and Lawrence Krauss has been in the thick of it. With his characteristic verve, and using many clever devices, he’s made that remarkable story remarkably accessible. The climax is a bold scientific answer to the great question of existence: Why is there something rather than nothing.”

-- Frank Wilczek, Nobel Laureate and Herman Feshbach professor at MIT, author of The Lightness of Being

"With characteristic wit, eloquence and clarity Lawrence Krauss gives a wonderfully illuminating account of how science deals with one of the biggest questions of all: how the universe's existence could arise from nothing. It is a question that philosophy and theology get themselves into muddle over, but that science can offer real answers to, as Krauss's lucid explanation shows. Here is the triumph of physics over metaphysics, reason and enquiry over obfuscation and myth, made plain for all to see: Krauss gives us a treat as well as an education in fascinating style."
--A. C. Grayling, author of The Good Book

"We have been living through a revolution in cosmology as wondrous as that initiated by Copernicus. Here is the essential, engrossing and brilliant guide."

--Ian McEwan

“Nothing is not nothing. Nothing is something. That's how a cosmos can be spawned from the void -- a profound idea conveyed in A Universe From Nothing that unsettles some yet enlightens others. Meanwhile, it's just another day on the job for physicist Lawrence Krauss.”
-- Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist, American Museum of Natural History

"Lively and humorous as well as informative… As compelling as it is intriguing.” (Publishers Weekly)

“[An] excellent guide to cutting-edge physics… It is detailed but lucid, thorough but not stodgy… [an] insightful book… Space and time can indeed come from nothing; nothing, as Krauss explains beautifully. …A Universe From Nothing is a great book: readable, informative and topical.” (New Scientist)

"Krauss possesses a rare talent for making the hardest ideas in astrophysics accessible to the layman, due in part to his sly humor… one has to hope that this book won't appeal only to the partisans of the culture wars – it's just too good and interesting for that. Krauss is genuinely in awe of the "wondrously strange" nature of our physical world, and his enthusiasm is infectious.” (San Francisco Chronicle, Huffington Post, AP)

“How physicists came up with the current model of the cosmos is quite a story, and to tell it in his elegant A Universe From Nothing, physicist Lawrence Krauss walks a carefully laid path… It would be easy for this remarkable story to revel in self-congratulation, but Krauss steers it soberly and with grace… His asides on how he views each piece of science and its chances of being right are refreshingly honest…unstable nothingness, as described by Krauss… is also invigorating for the rest of us, because in this nothingness there are many wonderful things to see and understand.” (Nature)

"In A Universe From Nothing, Lawrence Krauss, celebrated physicist, speaker and author, tackles all that plus a whole lot else. In fewer than 200 pages, he delivers a spirited, fast-paced romp through modern cosmology and its strong underpinnings in astronomical observations and particle physics theory.Krauss’s slim volume is bolder in its premise and more ambitious in its scope than most. He makes a persuasive case that the ultimate question of cosmic origin – how something, namely the universe, could arise from nothing – belongs in the realm of science rather than theology or philosophy." (Globe & Mail)

“An eloquent guide to our expanding universe… There have been a number of fine cosmology books published recently but few have gone so far, and none so eloquently, in exploring why it is unnecessary to invoke God to light the blue touchpaper and set the universe in motion.”
(Financial Times)

"His arguments for the birth of the universe out of nothingness from a physical, rather than theological, beginning not only are logical but celebrate the wonder of our natural universe. Recommended." (Library Journal)

“Krauss possesses a rare talent for making the hardest ideas in astrophysics accessible to the layman, due in part to his sly humor… one has to hope that this book won't appeal only to the partisans of the culture wars – it's just too good and interesting for that. Krauss is genuinely in awe of the "wondrously strange" nature of our physical world, and his enthusiasm is infectious.” (Associated Press)

"With its mind-bending mechanics, Krauss argues, our universe may indeed have appeared from nowhere, rather than at the hands of a divine creator. There's some intellectual heavy lifting here—Einstein is the main character, after all—but the concepts are articulated clearly, and the thrill of discovery is contagious. 'We are like the early terrestrial mapmakers,' Krauss writes, puzzling out what was once solely the province of our imaginations." (Mother Jones)

"The author delivers plenty of jolts in this enthusiastic and lucid but demanding overview of the universe, which includes plenty of mysteries—but its origin isn’t among them. A thoughtful, challenging book." (Kirkus)

"People always say you can't get something from nothing. Thankfully, Lawrence Krauss didn't listen. In fact, something big happens to you during this book about cosmic nothing, and before you can help it, your mind will be expanding as rapidly as the early universe." (Sam Kean, author of The Disappearing Spoon)

"A very interesting read from a foremost physicist of our time." (Santa Barbara Independent)

This Book Is Really Something!
By Book Shark
A Universe from Nothing by Lawrence M. Krauss

"A Universe from Nothing" is the fascinating book about how our universe came from nothing. Using the latest in scientific knowledge, his expertise and the innate ability to explain very complex topics in accessible manner earns this book five stars. Lawrence Krauss takes us on an exciting voyage of discovery that helps us understand the universe and further whets our appetite for more knowledge. This 224-page book is composed of the following eleven chapters: 1. A Cosmic Mystery Story: Beginnings, 2. A Cosmic Mystery Story: Weighing the Universe, 3. Light from the Beginning of Time, 4. Much Ado About Nothing, 5. The Runaway Universe, 6. The Free Lunch at the End of the Universe, 7. Our Miserable Future, 8. A Grand Accident?, 9. Nothing Is Something, 10. Nothing Is Unstable, and 11. Brave New Worlds.

Positives:
1. This book is truly something! A page turner.
2. A thought-provoking, inspirational quest for knowledge...I loved it!
3. A profound book that is intelligible. An achievement in its own right. Very complex topics accessible to the masses. Thank you.
4. Elegant prose with conviction. Lucid and clarity in a world of dark matter.
5. A journey of cosmological discoveries.
6. Effective use of charts and illustrations.
7. I have a much better understanding of our universe as a result of this book and most importantly it has only whet my appetite for even more knowledge...and that's why I read.
8. A love affair with science and for good reason. The three key principles of scientific ethos.
9. Startling conclusions are presented. The author does a wonderful job of letting us know what we do know versus what we don't know.
10. Some of the greatest discoveries presented.
11. I finally have a reasonable grasp of the Big Bang, Bazinga! The three main observational pillars.
12. Of course you will get to hear about the greats of science but I really appreciate the stories of the lesser known scientists who provided vital knowledge, such as, the story of Henrietta Swan Leavitt and Vera Rubin. Bravo!
13. Great facts spruced throughout the book and some jaw-dropping insight. One scientist was able to defend his mother in a witchcraft trial...find out whom.
14. What general relativity tells us.
15. The uses for gravitational lensing. Let's get Zwicky with it.
16. Dark matter and dark energy...enlighten me. Or at least try.
17. Quantum mechanics, I will never understand it but I can appreciate it what it provides.
18. The author does a good job of telling us what scientific progress has been made and how that applies to cosmology.
19. A flat universe?? Find out.
20. An explanation of nothing that means something to me. Can you say quantum fluctuations?
21. A "creator" in proper perspective. The requirement of some externality. Read it and you will understand.
22. Multiverses...oh my.
23. String theory a critical view.
24. A little bit of philosophy for good measure.
25. The best explanation for how something can come out of nothing to best current knowledge available.
26. Key concepts will now become part of your understanding..."the existence of energy in empty space".
27. Black holes under the light and some very interesting takes.
28. Spoiler alert...one of the most profound questions, "What I want to know is whether God had any choice in the creation of the universe." Thank you, Mr. Einstein.
29. An interesting look at Aristotle and the First Cause in the light of new knowledge.
30. The book ends with a bang of reality.

Negatives:
1. No links or bibliography.
2. A lot of the concepts of this book are hard to grasp. Some readers may not have the patience and inclination to take the time to properly digest what is being offered. That being said, the author does wonders in making such difficult concepts accessible.

In summary, this is a fantastic book, a real treat. I learned so much and admire the author for providing a book that is accessible and enjoyable to the masses. This book lived up to my expectations. Fascinating topics in the hands of a master results in a captivating book. This is how science books should be written. I can't recommend this book enough!

Further suggestions: "The Quantum Universe: (And Why Anything That Can Happen, Does)" and "Why Does E=mc2?: (And Why Should We Care?)" by Brian Cox, "Quantum Man: Richard Feynman's Life in Science (Great Discoveries)" also by Lawrence Krauss, "Nothing: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)" by Frank Close, "Knocking on Heaven's Door: How Physics and Scientific Thinking Illuminate the Universe and the Modern World" by Lisa Randall, and "The Grand Design" by Stephen Hawking.

Good explanations of physics, but not argued well
By Alexander Praefectus
The explanation of Big Bang cosmology and general relativity was excellent. I learned a lot about both from reading the first parts of the book. Pages one through 21 are definitely a good way of starting off the book, with a complete explanation of the evidence for the Big Bang and simple diagrams to answer "Where is the center of the universe ?". Indeed, even the critics of his thesis seem to agree that he did a good job of explaining science.

I also enjoyed a lot of the humor in the book, like the jokes about the geometry skills of American high school students and the stereotype of the graduate student as a slave who does work the professors don't want to. The afterword from Richard Dawkins was beautiful as well.

As somebody interested in the philosophy of physics, particularly the origins of the universe, I was excited to read this book. I wanted to see the argument that was presented by Krauss in favor of the idea that the universe came from nothing, especially after reading Quentin Smith's argument for the same idea in Theism, Atheism, and Big Bang Cosmology. Unfortunately, I found the title of the book to erroneous. The nothing that Lawrence Krauss describes in this book is not nothing. He is not describing the beginning of the universe from nothing, but the beginning of the universe from a quantum vacuum, which is described by physical laws and takes place in space-time. I don't think the content of the book lives up to the title. There is a debate in physics about whether virtual particles have real, ontological status, or if they are just results of equations and have no further implications on reality. I wish he had given more attention to this issue, because he didn't establish anything futher than the fact that the equations imply their existence. These two flaws were central to the purpose of the book.

Overall, I would recommend purchasing it. It has great explanations of physics, and you wil learn something by time you put the book down. However, even as an atheist, I feel that Dr. Krauss failed to establish his thesis, ending with a 3/5.

pleasurable, rewarding and complete
By Nigel Kirk
This shorter volume from Krauss marks his transition from talented science expositor to science champion. His crisp, clear and thorough discussion combines with a strong problem-focussed narrative to make this book a deserving popular science landmark. Some discussion retraces developments in physics that Krauss meticulously covers in previous longer books but this is necessary for a one-stop treatise on one of the most important topics in modern physics. Notes and references are omitted, acceptably in my opinion considering the briefer nature of this book. The development of the topic, the provision of a context through his intimate familiarity with the work of earlier physicists, and Krauss's offhand capacity to reduce complexity and hyperbole to a well rounded paragraph make this book pleasurable, rewarding and complete.

Krauss charts the development of theories regarding the universe's dimensions, mass, energy, inflation and homogeneity, touching on the importance of quantum fluctuations, dark energy and related phenomena. With this background, he explains Perlmutter's challenge, in 1996, to Krauss's statement that empty space might contain energy. With perfect timing, this book arrives just as Perlmutter, Reis and Schmidt gain their Nobel Prizes for confirming the accelerating expansion of the universe and as WMAP experiments hint at dark photons, all grist for the mill in the universe from nothing theory.

The treat at the end of this exposition is Krauss's scenario that humanity now enjoys the best opportunity, in terms of available evidence, to understand the universe's origin, evolution and fate. During this period, albeit billions of years long, we are able to still detect cosmic background radiation and view receding galaxies before they red-shift out of existence. We live at a good time and I am pleased that Hitch got to savour this scenario. Characteristically, Krauss then takes a sweep through and at the anthropic cosmological principal and string theory to frame the scientific method as a sometimes fuzzy, sometimes chicken and egg, but always logical way to investigate our existence. He logically extends this thinking in the `Brave New Worlds' chapter to collate some existing ideas and advance an analysis which is powerful and positive for science. His Epilogue comment from Camus, that "Sisyphus is smiling", appeals. Dawkins's quote from Carlyle in the afterword caps off the good humour with which Krauss has explored this topic.

Clearly Krauss has some fun with this book - the reader is left in no doubt of this plan after the first line in Chapter 1. The burst of early snipes at lazy thinkers and obfuscators risked the book taking a combative edge but readers can rest assured these remarks remained measured, valid and totally justified given the damage some obscurantists wilfully cause to scientific progress, increasingly to the future peril of humanity and the planet. Krauss introduces an allegory about his wallet card which diagrammatically explains how the abundance of different elements in the universe verifies the Big Bang Theory. He notes that the card has little value because the usual kind of challenger of his proposition has usually made up his or her mind. Herein lays the challenge and, no doubt, fate of this book.

I have taught Java coding to students using this company's books and have found great success.

Even if you've never written a line of code in your life, you'll find success with this book. It's intelligently written and will allow you to bring programming into your classroom.

Java is a very important language to teach kids because it easily represents 80% - 90% of the regular business world, in terms of custom applications written for internal business processes. In terms of employability, Java is a wonderful language for kids to know.

The book's content is age-appropriate and thorough. If you use this book as your classroom text, I would recommend that you use a direct instruction technique as you'll find your instruction more efficacious than if the students try to go it alone (though there are undoubtedly some gifted learners that will not have a problem with the book or the instructions).

Do not let Oracle NetBeans scare you! It's a great free product with lots of features and it is one that you'll learn quickly if you have any kind of technical aptitude at all. NetBeans is what we call and Interactive Development Environment (IDE), and it is what you'll use to write, debug, and compile your Java code.

The way I handle direct instruction using these books is to bring the students together and then we all begin to write some of the code. I do not anticipate that we'll finish entire long sections of code and I think it's important that kids understand they're not likely to bang out a big program in just a day. I stop periodically and explain some of the more challenging lines, teaching kids to read code from the inside out (when there are nested statements), using the board to illustrate how for-loops work, and breaking down other code components so that they're more digestible by kids. There are lots of imaginative ways to illustrate tough logical elements such as data arrays.

I believe that if you carefully craft your class so that the kids participate with you, but then you give then extra assignments to do in order to assess their learning, you will find that your students rapidly assimilate the coding.

Perfect for teachers and students
By paynea54
Perfect for teachers and students, home or the classroom!

What is "Java for Kids" ... and how it works.

The lessons "Java for Kids" are a highly organized and well-indexed set of tutorials meant for children aged 10 and above. NetBeans, a specific IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for beginners is used throughout the lessons.

The tutorials provide the benefit of completed age-appropriate applications for children - fully documented projects from the teacher's or parents' point of view. That is, while full solutions are provided for the adults' (and child learner's) benefit, the projects are presented in an easy-to-follow set of lessons explaining the rational for the form layout, coding design and conventions, and specific code related to the problem. Child-learners may follow tutorials at their own pace. Every bit of the lesson is remembered as it contributes to the final solution to a kid-friendly application. The finished product is the reward, but the student is fully engaged and enriched by the process. This kind of learning is often the focus of teacher training. Every computer science teacher knows what a great deal of preparation is required for projects to work for kids. With these tutorials, the research behind the projects is done by an author who understands the classroom and parenting experience. That is extremely rare!

Graduated Lessons for Every Project ... Lessons, examples, problems and projects. Graduated learning. Increasing and appropriate difficulty... Great results.

With these projects, there are lessons providing a comprehensive, kid-friendly background on the programming topics to be covered. Once understood, concepts are easily applicable to a variety of applications. Then, specific examples are drawn out so that a young learner can practice with the NetBeans environment. Then specific Java coding for the example is provided so that the user can see all the parts of the project come together for the finished product.

By presenting lessons in this graduated manner, students are fully engaged and appropriately challenged to become independent thinkers who can come up with their own project ideas and design their own forms and do their own coding. Once the process is learned, then student engagement is unlimited! I have seen literacy improve dramatically because students cannot get enough of what is being presented.

Indeed, lessons encourage accelerated learning - in the sense that they provide an enriched environment to learn computer science, but they also encourage accelerating learning because students cannot put the lessons away once they start! Computer science provides this unique opportunity to challenge students, and it is a great testament to the authors that they are successful in achieving such levels of engagement with consistency.

My History with Kidware Software products.

I have used Kidware's Programming Tutorials for over a decade to keep up my own learning. By using these lessons, I am able to spend time on things which will pay off in the classroom. I do not waste valuable time ensconced in language reference libraries for programming environments - help screens which can never be fully remembered! These projects are examples of how student projects should be as final products - thus, the pathway to learning is clear and immediate in every project.

If I want to use or expand upon some of the projects for student use, then I take advantage of site-license options. I have found it very straight forward to emphasize the fundamental computer science topics that form the basis of these projects when using them in the classroom. I can list some computer science topics which everyone will recognize, regardless of where they teach - topics which are covered expertly by these tutorials:

* Data Types and Ranges

* Scope of Variables

* Naming Conventions

* Decision Making

* Looping

* Language Functions - String, Date, Numerical

* Arrays

* Writing Your own Methods (subroutines) and more... it's all integrated into the tutorials.

In many States or Provinces, the above-listed topics would not be formally introduced in Middle School computer studies, but would form the basis of most projects undertaken by students. With these tutorials, you as the teacher or parent may choose where to put the emphasis, to be sure to cover the curricular expectations of your curriculum documents.

Any further Middle school computer programming topics derive directly from those listed above. Nothing is forgotten. All can be integrated with the lessons provided.

Quick learning curve for teachers! How teachers can use the product:

Having projects completed ahead of time can allow the teacher to present the design aspect of the project FIRST, and then have students do all of their learning in the context of what is required in the finished product. This is a much faster learning curve than if students designed all of their own projects from scratch. Lessons concentrating on a unified outcome for all makes for much more streamlined engagement for students (and that is what they need, in Middle school, and in grades 9 and 10), as they complete more projects within a short period of time and there is a context for everything that is learned.

With the Java for Kids tutorials, sound advice regarding generally accepted coding strategies ("build and test your code in stages", "learn input, output, formatting and data storage strategies for different data types" etc..) encourage independent thought processes among learners. After mastery, then it is much more likely that students can create their own problems and solutions from scratch. Students are ready to create their own summative projects for your computer science course - or just for fun, and they may think of projects for their other courses as well! And what could be wrong with asking the students' other teachers what they would like to see as project extensions?

Meets State and Provincial Curriculum Expectations and More

Different states and provinces have their own curriculum requirements for computer science. With the Kidware Software products, you have at your disposal a series of projects which will allow you to pick and choose from among those which best suit your curriculum needs. Students focus upon design stages and sound problem-solving techniques from a computer-science, problem-solving perspective. In doing so, they become independent problem-solvers, and will exceed the curricular requirements of Middle schools and Secondary schools everywhere.

Useable projects - Out of the box!

The specific projects covered in the Java for Kids tutorials are suitable for students aged 10 and above. Specific kid-friendly tutorials and projects are found in the Contents document, and include

Sub-Sandwich Party
Savings Calculator
Guess the Number Game
Lemonade Stand
Card Wars
Blackboard Fun (GUI, meaning it has a Graphical User Interface)
Balloons (GUI)

And, from the final chapter,
Computer Stopwatch
Dice Rolling
State Capitals
Tic-Tac-Toe (GUI)
Memory Game (GUI)
Pong (GUI)

As you can see, there is a high degree of care taken so that projects are age-appropriate.

You as a parent or teacher can begin teaching the projects on the first day. It's easy for the adult to have done their own learning by starting with the solution files. Then, they will see how all of the parts of the lesson fall into place. Even a novice could make use of the accompanying lessons.

How to teach students to use the materials.

In a Middle school situation, parents or teachers might be tempted to spend considerable amounts of time at the projector or computer screen going over the tutorial - but the best strategy is to present the finished product first! That way, provided that the adult has covered the basic concepts listed in the table of contents, then students will quickly grasp how to use the written lessons on their own. Lessons will be fun, and the pay-off for younger students is that there is always a finished product which is fun to use!

Highly organized reference materials for student self-study!

Materials already condense what is available from Java SDK help files (which tends to be written for adults) and in a context and age-appropriate manner, so that younger students remember what they learn.

The time savings for parents, teachers and students is enormous as they need not sift through pages and pages of on-line help to find what they need.

How to mark the projects.

In a classroom environment, it is possible for teachers to mark student progress by asking questions during the various problem design and coding stages. In the early grades (grades 5 to 8) teachers can make their own oral, pictorial review or written pop quizzes easily from the reference material provided as a review strategy from day to day. I have found the requirement of completing projects (mastery) sufficient for gathering information about student progress - especially in the later grades (grades 10 to 12).

Lessons encourage your own programming extensions.

Once concepts are learned, it is difficult to NOT know what to do for your own projects. This is true even at the Middle school level - where applications can be made in as short as 10 minutes (a high-low guessing game, or a temperature conversion program, for example), or 1 period in length - if one wished to expand upon any of the projects using the "Other Things to Try" suggestions.

Having used Kidware Software tutorials for the past decade, I have to say that I could not have achieved the level of success which is now applied in the variety of many programming environments which are currently of considerable interest to kids! I thank Kidware Software and its authors for continuing to stand for what is right in the teaching methodologies which work with kids - even today's kids where competition for their attention is now so much an issue.

Practical Kabbalah: A Guide to Jewish Wisdom for Everyday Life, by Laibl Wolf

Kabbalah is an ancient Jewish wisdom that explains the laws of spiritual energy. Up until very recently the Kabbalah was reserved for the elite, those who only after years of scholarship and practice were allowed to enter this mystical realm. However, one doesn't need to devote one's life to intense study to reap the rich rewards of the Kabbalah. With just a basic understanding of a few key concepts, our lives can be enriched immensely. We can then begin to fulfill our deepest dreams and reach our most important goals, becoming the people we long to become.

By learning to understand the Sefirot--the ten spiritual properties that flow from the cosmic source into our heart--we can connect to the universe and profoundly transform our experience of daily life. For example, Hessed, or "loving-kindness," represents the desire to be generous, while Gevurah is the desire to focus intently or withhold. These properties must be balanced in order for harmony and well-being to occur. Rabbi Laibl Wolf shows how to maintain that balance and enjoy a healthy and productive life by using simple meditation and creative visualization techniques to grasp the spiritual nature of our life.

Practical Kabbalah draws upon ancient wisdom but offers a modern interpretation and easy-to-understand techniques for delving deeper into our selves and our world and for reaping the bounteous gifts that were always meant for us.

Amazon.com Review
Kabbalah remains shrouded in mystery even to those familiar with the ideas of its teachings. An ancient Jewish tradition that espouses theosophy, Kabbalah seeks to use mysticism to explain the relationship between the universe and man, by means of 10 steps known as sefirot. Those who are well-versed in Kabbalah are considered holy men, respected tremendously in their communities and turned to in times of question or need. Yet, Kabbalah need not remain delegated to a select few; as Rabbi Laibl Wolf invites in his book Practical Kabbalah: A Guide to Jewish Wisdom for Everyday Life: "Embark on a spiritual adventure with a down-to-earth destination" using the powers, or "spiritual flows," of sefirot. Using this mystical tradition, Rabbi Wolk aims to make the fundamental principles relevant to everyday life, to help people use it as a means of self-understanding and furthering personal growth.

The first section, "Spirit Move," explores the tradition of Kabbalah, tracing its roots to the Bible and comparing many of its traditions to Eastern religions, suggesting they originated in the same beliefs. The second section, "Flows of Mind and Emotion," devotes a chapter to each of the sefirot--three of which relate to the mind, the other seven to emotion--to show how you can use these tenets to improve your life. For instance, Tif'eret relates to a wise heart, and its chapter concentrates on ideas such as "inner balance for wellness," truth and beauty, and compassion using the teachings of Maimonides and the Bible, a Hasidic tale, an exercise, a meditation, and even some thoughts on Deepak Chopra.

If you are searching for a book that will explain the doctrine of Kabbalah, this is not the book for you. However, for a spiritual person looking for a way to integrate some of the more popular self-help techniques into religious practice, Practical Kabbalah is an excellent guide. --Jenny Brown

From Publishers Weekly
Kabbalah is the richest repository of ancient Jewish mysticism. Its myriad writings express the profundity of God's mysteries and "explain the eternal laws of how spiritual energy moves through the Cosmos." For centuries, holy men have devoted their entire lives to plumbing its depths. Rabbi Wolf, who leads workshops and seminars on Kabbalah, believes that the great wisdom of Kabbalah can be used in everyday life to achieve balance and harmony. In the first section of the book, Wolf provides a useful introduction to the history of Kabbalah and its interpretation. He discusses Kabbalah's many layers and paints a picture of the kabbalist, someone whose life is devoted to prayer and the study of Kabbalah. In his second section, Wolf elaborates upon the 10 Sefirot, "the spiritual energies of Mind and Emotion," that make up Kabbalah. The Kabbalah teaches that the universe's creation is incomplete and these Sefirot are the tools we can use to "create the environment through which the universe can be perfected." For example, Wolf interprets "Hessed" as the "unlocking flow of love." He notes that "Hessed is the dominant flow that propels us to a state of oneness and unity." As in the other meditations, Wolf offers a variety of meditation exercises on the Sefirot so that the Sefirot can be woven into everyday life. The author uses stories from Hasidic teachers, biblical stories and personal anecdotes to illustrate the ways that Kabbalah can guide seekers to spiritual unity. (June)

Two rabbis, a world apart (Benyosef in Jerusalem, Wolf in Australia), take quite different approaches to bringing the Kabbalah to modern readers. Kabbalah, a set of ancient mystic Jewish teachings, dates from ancient times but reached its flowering in 18th-century central Europe. Over the centuries, there have been many great teachers of Kabbalah. Benyosef bases his teachings on those of Rafael Moshe Luria, a modern master of Kabbalah and a direct descendant of the famous 16th-century Kabbalist R. Isaac Luria. Benyosef guides the reader through the holidays and festivals of the Jewish year and shows how these events can be celebrated and understood via concepts developed by Moshe Luria. The text will speak to those already familiar with the Kabbalah and who wish to contrast the Lurian approach with that of other Kabbalists. Beginners will find the text rough going. In contrast, Wolf (who bases his teachings on those of the late Lubavicher Rebbe Schneerson) shows how the Kabbalah fits into other mystic traditions such as Zen Buddhism and Hinduism. Using meditation exercises, Wolf, who is also a psychologist, hopes to bring the reader to inner peace and spiritual communion with God. Highly recommended for Kabbalah novice
By MLB
Kabbalah is not easy to grasp, in fact, it is a life long study. This book is the most understandable intro to Kabbalah I have found, without making it so easy that the spiritual essence is lost. Rabbi Wolf loves Kabbalah, and he treats his subject and his readers with utmost respect.

Lacks the depth a person will need
By StarvingCollegeStudent
We are considering a move to either Costa Rica or Puerto Rico. First, I read "Becoming an Expat: Costa Rica 2014" then I read this book. The book on Costa Rica offered a lot of detail a person would need to know if they were planning a move to Costa Rica. When I read this book, I found myself feeling let down by the lack of detail. Spencer touches upon a lot of important topics but either refers you to an internet site for more information or just stops short entirely. Either way, this book did not meet my expectations.

"The psychologist Roy F. Baumeister has shown that the force metaphor has a kernel of neurobiological reality. InWillpower, he has teamed up with the irreverentNew York Timesscience columnist John Tierney to explain this ingenious research and show how it can enhance our lives. . . .Willpoweris an immensely rewarding book, filled with ingenious research, wise advice and insightful reflections on the human condition."—Steven Pinker,The New York Times Book Review

"An accessible, empirically grounded guide to willpower and how best to deploy it to overcome temptation."—The Wall Street Journal

"Willpoweris sure to inspire further groundbreaking research into the mechanics of willpower. One implication is already apparent. Since repeated behaviors eventually turn into habits, improving willpower long term requires a unique strategy-a habit of changing habits, of continually expanding our zones of comfort. One such practice, it seems, is the 'routine' of learning. That's a habit that this brilliant book will certainly nourish."—The Daily Beast

"Baumeister and Tierney use their appealingly upbeat voice to explain the intricate call-and-response between the failure of self-control and its problematical results."—Kirkus Reviews

"Willpower affects almost every aspect of our lives. From procrastination, to saving for retirement to exercising, Tierney and Baumeister have given us a wonderful book in which they not only share fascinating research on the subject but also provide simple tricks to help us tap into this important quality."—Dan Ariely, Duke University, author ofPredictably Irrational

"Who knew that a book about such a daunting topic could be as wonderfully entertaining as it is enlightening! Tierney and Baumeister have produced a highly intelligent work full of fascinating information (and great advice) about a core element of modern living. Bravo."—David Allen, author ofGetting Things DoneandMaking It Work

"Willpower (the thing) lies at the curious intersection of science and behavior.Willpower(the book) lies at the intersection of Roy Baumeister, an extraordinarily creative scientist, and John Tierney, a phenomenally perceptive journalist. Ignore it at your peril."—Stephen J. Dubner, coauthor ofFreakonomicsandSuperfreakonomics

"Will, willpower, and mental energy have been shunned by modern psychology. Roy Baumeister, the most distinguished experimental social psychologist in the world, and John Tierney, a renowned journalist, have teamed up to put Will back into its rightful center stage place. This little masterpiece is a must read for all of us who want to exercise, diet, manage our time, be thrifty, and resist temptation."—Martin Seligman, former president of American Psychological Association

"This is a manual from heaven for anyone who has ever wanted to lose weight, stop smoking, drink less, work more efficiently and more intelligently. An astonishingly good - and accessible - inquiry into one of the more elusive areas of human psychology: why we go on thwarting ourselves when we really know better. On top of that, Willpower is a vastly entertaining book, full of fascinating stories about the complexities of our evolutionarily-wired brains. A brilliant accomplishment, at every level."—Christopher Buckley, author ofThank You for Smoking

"Deep and provocative analysis of people's battle with temptation and masterful insights into understanding willpower: why we have it, why we don't, and how to build it. A terrific read."—Ravi Dhar, Yale School of Management, Director of Center for Customer Insights

whatever you would like to call it
By Billie Pritchett
Roy Baumeister's Willpower was an enjoyable book, and fascinating for what it says about us as human beings. The most fascinating point is this. Willpower, self-control, free-will, whatever you would like to call it, is a relative capacity, and it is more or less controlled by certain features of our physiology, and it is particularly tied to glucose. Think of glucose in the body as the fuel that lets you run, or gives you self-control or free will. When this fuel gets burned up through the activities you engage in throughout your day, your level of self-control decreases. You make bad or hasty decisions, you get angry at a loved one, you don't do something as well as you should have, etc. And it's all because you are burning up the fuel that powers your body. The book is very good and practical about what to do to avoid your depletion of self-control, and it involves getting a reasonable amount of sleep and eating well throughout your day. 'Well' in 'eating well' is the operative word, by the way, because what gives your body a good dose of glucose that will serve your body best is healthy food that contains sugars but that does not just give your body a quick dose of sugar. Things like energy drinks, for instance, can increase your glucose levels, but they also cause a big crash because these are the kinds of sugars that burn quickly. Slow-burning sugars are the ticket. The book also gives other practical advice about kinds of exercises you can do throughout your day to increase your willpower. Perhaps it's a truism, but one easy way is setting clear goals, sticking with a standard to meet those goals, and rewarding yourself for the big and little goals met proportionate to the size of the goals are all ways you can maintain adequate levels of self-control and not use too much energy worrying or involved in trivial matters. Pretty good book.

This explains a lot....
By Nadaa A. Taiyab
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As someone who is constantly striving to improve my willpower and self-discipline, I read this book with keen interest. However, this book gave me the most unexpected insight - why I hate shopping SO much! I avoid it, I procrastinate, I just go without even if I am perfectly able to afford the item I need.

Whenever I go to the mall I feel absolutely drained and miserable, while my bargain hunting mother and sister absolutely thrive off it. Here's the reason - making decisions about what items to buy requires will power and drains energy! It's something called decision fatigue.

The author presents a disturbing case study in which parole judges would be multiple times more likely to grant parole for prisoners they reviewed earlier in the day than later in the day. By the end of the day they were too tired to go through all the effort to review the info and make a good decision so they just erred on the side of caution!

The overall message of the book is that we have a finite store of daily willpower. We use that same store for everything that requires will power, from going to the gym to finishing a difficult report. Willpower requires energy, specifically glucose, which is why it is important to refuel a bit before attempting something difficult. On a positive note, willpower can be strengthened and expanded with practice. Small successes build our confidence and ultimately our willpower - a concept known as self-efficacy.

However, If you are trying to make lifestyle changes you have a greater chance of success by attempting one thing at a time. This approach allows you to concentrate our willpower on a new activity until it becomes habit and no longer requires much willpower.

Bottom line - it's a really fun read and you might learn a few things about yourself along the way.

Wow!!!
By Kindle Customer
This book is not what one would or might imagine. It's not a traditional self-help book that'll get you no where and hardly ever work. This one is filled with simple and many studies that can be very surprising and very easy to understand. Surprisingly enough, glucose depletion severely lowers our ability to exercise self-control. A studied and true, and for me, new concept.

A main premise of this book is why and how self-control, self-regulation or monitoring can be learned. That virtually anything from deciding where to eat, what movie to watch, or even which road to take depletes our willpower. Considering that we start the day with a certain amount of willpower, each little decision or even deciding not to decide, depletes energy and thus willpower. worldwide studies have been conducted on all these concepts. Many results surprised the researchers. Many old but tried and true adages have been shown to work. A good breakfast is really the most important meal of the day! It's true. It's been studied, tested and has been found to work. Starting with a full tank of glucose is critical and more important, easy.

Once started on self-control, in any area, eventually will become a habit. No more decisions to make on that one. Self-control, having been created in one aspect of life tends to generalize across others. Habits finally enable us to dispense with most decision making, lowering stress, expending less effort, reserving more willpower for those more critical decisions that we encounter less frequently.

I've a MS in psychology, and what I've learned from this book amazes me! This, to me, is a must read and we'll worth the small cost. I'll be reading it again. I'm hoping you'll give it an earnest try. You won't be disappointed.
