An outstanding book on reading the Tarot de Marseille

It's been a long time since I was as excited and intrigued by a new 'how-to' book on reading the Tarot. Ben-Dov describes the Tarot as a work of art, through whose details a full range of human experiences can be revealed. The book features the Marseilles Tarot deck—a deck that's gaining greater interest and appreciation among English-speaking Tarotists. [Additionally, Ben-Dov has created what I believe to be the most elegant restoration of the classic Conver Marseille deck available, The CBD Tarot de Marseille, which process aided him in his close attention to detail in the cards.[

What has been notably missing in English Tarot literature are good, non-Waite-based meanings for the four suits. You need look no further. The focus here is on reading the cards through the scenarios one perceives when looking at the images. For the Majors, Ben-Dov says the possibilities are open. Nevertheless, he points out valuable interpretive perspectives derived from symbolic, historical and mythological associations, many of which I found both original and obvious (once-stated)—in other words, extremely helpful as kick-starter phrases for the cards. Through comparison and contrast among the Majors he shows how the cards can relate to one another. Emphasis is on the therapeutic approach, rather than being predictive or proscriptive. Providing an excellent introduction to practical reading issues, he stresses developing familiarity with psychological practices.

Previous authors offered one of three approaches to the Marseille Minor pip cards: 1) a straightforward transfer of the Waite-Smith Minor Arcana meanings to the Marseille deck, 2) a memorized set of meanings often derived from Etteilla, or 3) a personal synthesis of number-plus-suit meanings for each card. Ben-Dov bases his sensible Minor Arcana explications on the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky, emphasizing visual cues in the cards along with number, which make their arrangements 'sensible,' and easy to learn and build on. His descriptions of the thematic progression within the Major and Minor suits provide an immediate handle on each segment of the deck. In keeping with his therapeutic approach, the Court Cards represent attitudes and characteristics of the querent rather than other people, although there's nothing to stop you from applying them to others. I only wish that Ben-Dov had included sample readings utilizing the Minors like he did for the Majors, as his examples were so insightful.

Spreads are kept simple with some innovative approaches to working with both Major and Minor suit cards that are well-worth trying out. His simple instructions for creating your own spreads gives you an infinite palette of deeply meaningful options to choose from.

I have two pet peeves: Ben-Dov completely ignores the first two hundred years of Tarot's history when he describes the Marseille Tarot as the 'genuine model', with the 'true order' for the cards, saying it offers, "the most faithful and accurate representation of the ancient Tarot symbols." The oldest decks (15th century Italian) are quite different in style, and there were several different orders for the cards in its first century. It would be better to describe the Marseille-style decks as the most long-lasting, consistent design, which is not to be scoffed at. My second pet peeve involves misunderstandings of the Golden Dawn system of Tarot reading, resulting in minor errors that are not centrally relevant to this work. Personally, I think he should have left out his few Golden Dawn references or listed the differences in an appendix.

Overall, this book offers fresh, practical instructions for reading the Marseille Tarot that will give you a great appreciation for the details and special characteristics of this deck, as well as great insights into the reading process itself.

Open Reading = Up and Reading

Anybody who has shuffled Yoav Ben Dov's tarot de Marseille feels at home. The images are crisp and gentle. The deck slips around with an ease that mirrors the flow of the symbolic universe, or perhaps, like a mirror where the symbolic universe flows.

Feeling at home in a house of mirrors is an image I would like to keep in mind while reading Yoav 's book: Tarot, The Open Reading. Tarot books are like amusement parks: we enter them knowing exactly what we will find while secretly hoping to be surprised. Yoav's book delivers the thrill of the familiar while packing the bang of a few surprises. The eternal beginner gets to ride the Bumper Cars of tarot's history and the Mechanical Bull of tarot meanings. Those who suffer from vertigo can take it slow and go around in the Carousel of court cards or take a spin in the Teacups of pips. Yoav takes both the French and the English traditions through a Tunnel of Love inviting us to peek at their (rather incestuous) hanky panky.

The main ride is, of course, the Marseille Tarot itself by means of what Yoav calls the "Open Reading", a Reverse Bungee whose admission ticked reads "everything is a symbol". This is Yoav's way of telling us to hang onto our hats. The symbolic universe sweeps us off our feet way before the cards come out of the box. This is a palatable idea for those of us who feed from abstractions. As every part of our bodies becomes arcane, every gesture we make with them can be interpreted.

Through the open reading the tarot becomes infinite. Yoav accomplishes this without cracking any eggs. His voice is always kind, always patient. To us it may seem as if this book accompanies his tarot when in truth he restored the tarots to accompany his book. After years of work to make it whole we now have access to Yoav's vision.

Three good reasons to buy this book

After reading dozens of books on the subject – or should I say, lists of random meanings and rituals spiced up with rambling new age-ish gibberish- some people might feel like giving up on studying tarot, unless, of course, they find the right book to read. I honestly think there are very few books on tarot that are worth their price, and Mr. Ben Dov’s The Open Reading is one of those. Since much has been said in the previous reviews, I will just list my three good reasons to buy the book:

- An anti-dogmatic and compelling approach
While some chapters of the book are devoted to finding the possible meanings of each card, this is done in order to introduce the reader to the author’s method of understanding tarot. But, as a matter of fact, there is no such a thing as an absolutly “correct” meaning. This is not to say that it’s unimportant that a card shows up instead of another one just because the same thing could be signified by different spreads: quite the contrary, as we are invited to think why that card showed up, without having some self-proclaimed guru think and feel on our behalf. Reading this book is about mastering a (good) method, not our memory skills.

- A deep and fun way of enhancing one’s intuition, creativity, awareness
One might feel that Ben Dov’s method ultimately leads to total chaos. However, by stating that “everything is a sign”, the author exhorts us to pay special attention to our feelings and intuitions and trust them. Of course, previous knowledge and careful study of the deck is needed (e.g. knowing that the page of swords is left-handed before getting to read for someone else might really help), but while it is always good to have some ready-to-use meanings in case we run low on inspiration (it’ll be another sign, after all), most of the work is done when we are able to relate to the spread, which means we can understand our own reaction to the cards.

- It “works” with every deck
I tend to be very picky when it comes to tarot decks, and I’m a Marseilles guy as a rule. The Open Reading was specifically written for the author’s lovely restoration of Conver’s Tarot of Marseilles (which can be bought on his website). However, Ben Dov’s book could prove very helpful even to those who prefer reading on a Rider Waite, or Wirth, or Italian style deck. In fact, as I mentioned above, this book is not about learning meanings: it’s about learning how tarot cards could mean something.

Easy, practical guide to language acquisition

Just finished reading this book (it literally took me only 2 hours). It is well written and provides easy, to the point tips on how to build your language skills.
I liked the structure: 4 sections focusing on the core language skills, i.e.listening, reading, writing and speaking, and found the exercises extremely meaningful to brush up any foreign languages and achieve fluency.
My most favorite part are the interviews (will steal the idea) with professionals who share their methods for language acquisition.
I'm really looking forward to delving into the exercises and start seeing results.

I wish this was written much earlier.

I just purchased this book a few hours ago and it's a quick read (for me, it was less than two hours); short and concise. This is an excellent piece of work and one that I think language learners should begin with before they even start learning a language (even though I say this, it's still very useful for those of us who have already been at work trying to learn a language).

Hammes gives straight to the point suggestions on how to best utilize ones time when working on languages and how to spread their learning over all four of the main skills rather than focusing heavily on one skill at the expense of the others. This is very important not only because it brings about balance to the learner, but it also (in my opinion) enables one to gain more confidence. The more areas a person works on, the more growth they're able to see and the more growth they see, the more they'll be encouraged to continue towards their objective.

This book is also refreshing for me because, while it does talk about results in language learning, it doesn't follow the current trend of searching for "language hacks" and trying to reach fluency overnight. More than anything, this book stresses effective study methods and how to use variety so one is not bored and also so the learner is well rounded in whichever language(s) they're learning. There's even a supplemental chart for writing out language goals and objectives over a certain course of time. I've already downloaded, printed, and wrote out my objectives for the remainder of this month, so almost immediately, I've gained something from this book. I'm glad I bought this. I only wish it had been out years ago, but better late than never.

A practical approach

I just finished the book and I will recommend it to all my clients who are learning french. This is a very practical approach with a plan and tips that will convince any language learners. I like the way readers can assess their current level on the four language skills and then adapt the proposed plan to their level. Also, the interviews with language experts are precious. Enjoyed it very much.

You've got to be kidding!

I've read several other books on Kegel exercizes and this book is probably the worst, and I'm amazed several people said it was "Amazing". The writter isn't clear, trys to spice things up with a goofy mystique style of writing, and discribes Kegels as pushing out, as in letting out a fart. Excuse me, but that sounds like a reverse Kegel, not squeezing your PC. A PC squeeze is the same sensation as shutting off a urine flow, lifting the floor of your pelvic area, lifting your genitals and/or scrotum. In fact I tried to stop my urine flow exactly as she discribes in the book and nothing happened to the flow, only a shart. :-) Then I did a proper Kegel and stopped the flow cold. Either this writter doesn't know how to Kegel or they are confused between a RK and a Kegel. Guess you could say, writter doesn't know jack ship. :-)

Avoid this item like a plague!

This is more a pamphlet rather than a novelette or book. The material is incomplete, with an invitation to buy a larger video package at a greatly reduced cost. The author's poor attempt to flaunt her breast is a joke; I could only image how gross the video would be. It is unfortunate because she does have writing skills and had she developed this pamphlet into a manual it would have made more sense. Please don't try to market me with come on inside your material.

Previously, the retired British prime minister wrote--and wrote pugnaciously--about her long tenure in the premiership in The Downing Street Years (1993). Now Thatcher fills in, chronologically speaking, by writing about her life prior to becoming prime minister and after she left office and does so, perhaps, even more self-righteously. Born "over the shop" (her father's grocery, that is) in 1925 in Grantham, England, Thatcher was raised in a household "practical, serious and intensely religious." Those qualities became her qualities, and by the time she got to Oxford, she recognized politics as her calling. She threw her hat into the ring early, running for Parliament when only in her twenties. By nature conservative, she was by enlistment a Conservative. The path by which she became head of that party and then prime minister is traced in typical Thatcher fashion: her narrative is opinionated, self-assured, and, as the reader has to admit, well reasoned. Expect the same heavy demand by serious readers of politics and history as the first volume garnered. Brad Hooper

A road less travelled...

In this book, the prequel to her more successful (and essentially more interesting) volume entitled 'The Downing Street Years', Margaret Thatcher gives us a glimpse into her life, and the events and people who shaped her, basically, who made her who she is.
You'll learn about her time at university, her early days in politics from a personal standpoint (for instance, she used to do her own ironing to press dresses immediately before going out, as she couldn't afford to have them pressed, and other small details like this abound), early days in the government and then leading up to the time in opposition prior to the elections of 1979.
Thatcher also adds a postscript to this book, completed after the account of her time as Prime Minister, in which she gives her prescriptions for a better Britain and Europe (in some ways, she might agree that her stance on the Eurocurrency is a la Nancy Reagan, i.e., 'Just say No!'). She has a few swipes at John Major, the man she helped into power, perhaps hoping to be able to be an active and effective agent from behind the scenes. Major retaliates a bit in his own autobiography.
In all, unless you're REALLY into British politics or Thatcher personally, this book could be easily missed. Read 'The Downing Street Years', and, as I've seen you can often pick this book up for some bargain-bin price, buy it so as to have the set. And you might peruse a chapter here and there.
It does have a good style of writing, but goes on quite a bit. Historians will appreciate it, but I often wonder if politicians think that most will actually read through all this material, considering they are invariably written when the author is off the centre stage?

What makes a book interesting is the emotional content of the story. Mrs Thatcher wants to avoid that. It is not entirely possible. But by judicious pilling on of verbiage she manages very well.

You will have to admit after working your way through it that the last 30% is just padding that says a lot but tells you nothing.

What is interesting is the level of intellectual division there is to Mrs. Thatcher. She is a Conservative, therefore she loves the monarchy and is big on the idea of how important her father was to her life. However it is worth noting that Mrs thatcher is the one prime minister who had the worst relations with the queen, and everything she did personally after she reached adulthood was an inversion of his principles. She was raised one way, she raised her children in an exactly opposite manner. Her father was a methodist and the Thatcher household was notorious for the level of alcohol consumed. She was a Conservative, but also she was the most revolutionary leader since Disraeli.

What makes this an interesting book is the level of internal conflict in her mind. This from a lady mostly notorious for "knowing her own mind" on everything.

It is obvious that the lessons taught by Alf Roberts to his younger daughter stood her in good stead. She was a hard worker and sweated all the details every step of the way. That is how she reached the top. She had no patience for those around her who didn't work as hard as she did. This sort of explains her very good relations with many Labour party leaders who had similar work habits, and the poisonous relations for several Conservative party leaders who tried to coast on manner and privilege.

What makes an autobiography worth while is the confessions along the way. Like President Grant she makes no bones that in her early days she made lots of mistakes and she learned several lessons the hard way. Like with General Grant, she often explains the lesson learned. For many people the lessons she took from an event are not ones they would take from the same circumstances. But they explain many of the responses to events over her time in office. For example, the Heath cabinet was notable for its Comity. Comity that lead them into destruction. The Thatcher governments were chiefly notable for their level of quarrelsomeness all through the eleven years she ran the country.

As with any autobiography as much is explained even more is obscured. There are definite places she does not want to visit. Which is an interesting insight in itself.

One of the delights of the book is the level of dry humor involved. She makes many wry observations all through the book. They are a very nice dividend.

So on balance, I would recommend the book for its wit, the way is reveals and sometimes reveals through concealment the levers that motivated one of the most interesting leaders of the modern era. If you pick it up with your eyes and mind open it will explain a lot and you will get a lot out of it.

St. Paul, I'm not a fan!

I have never been a St. Paul fan. His" woman go home and do what your husband wants" speech was a real turn off, but I found out he didn't write it. It was written later by someone else. I like this book and I even like Paul. Pope Benedict does a lot to explain Paul and how he fits in. I found the book illuminating and realized that I have not been fair to Paul. Pope Benedict is a real academic and I found his work really thought-provoking. St. Paul is really worth the time.

The Pope continues the teaching he began in earlier audiences that have been turned into books, like The Fathers and The Apostles. This sketch of The Apostle is a loving, insightful meditation on Paul's conversion and teaching.

One of the left-handed compliments in vogue in the secular world is to label Paul as the "founder of the Church." Beware of people who propagate this myth; they'll use the bible as a reliable, historical source when they wish to document Paul's travels - and travel he did - he truly was the apostle to the Gentiles, and evangelized much of the Mediterranean.

Yet these same people suddenly adopt a skeptical approach to the bible when you try to point out that Paul actually met Christ on the road to Damascus, or the years he spent in learning the teaching of Christ from the twelve in Jerusalem. The goal of such people is to separate Christ from his Church, to say that the Church is a human creation and not the mystical body of the Son of God. Pope Benedict carefully and lovingly presents Paul as very much a pillar of Christ's Church, but not its founder.

Pope Benedict also explains Paul's message of justification by faith, pointing out the places of agreement with Protestants, but also very gently distinguishing the place of charity (manifested in works) as the ultimate fruit of faith. Faith without works is indeed a dead faith.

Some of the topics covered are the sacraments (especially Baptism, the Eucharist and Marriage), Paul's Christology, the Cross and the Resurrection (and why the two can't be separated and make up one Paschal mystery), and the Parousia.

This is excellent teaching for all believers; it is deep in meaning without being technical or difficult to understand.

I enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book. However, if you are looking for a more in depth review of St. Paul and his life, I would look elsewhere. The former pope, as always in my opinion, provides an elegant theological overview of Paul's mission and message. While I found this interesting, I felt that a discussion of Paul himself was quite peripheral and almost served as a platform for former Pope Benedict to teach theology. In fact, each chapter was derived from his weekly addresses best I could discern.

A Weatlth of Information for a Great Price!

Very informative. I've been home-brewing for a few years now and would consider myself an intermediate-level home-brewer but still learning. With this in mind I didn't use it as much for the step-by-step explanations on how to get started in brewing (although it did provide in-depth instructions), but rather used it for advice on moving from extract to all-grain brewing. It definitely helped me get off on the right track. It really digs into some of the science behind the brewing process, but in a simple way so people understand the why and how instead of just following steps. There was also a lot of information and history about beer that I found interesting and hadn't known. This is a great book if you're looking for an all-encompassing reference about beer including beer history, ingredients, making your first batch, troubleshooting techniques, and some great sounding recipes. For the money, you can't beat it.

A rarity: A well written guide book.

I am an amateur home brewer with a bunch of great brews under my belt, however, I haven't brewed in a while because I lost the passion. A friend got this book for my recent birthday and I am back! This book has instantly revived my passion for brewing, through engaging writing, detailed recipes, and interesting history! I dug out my carboy and dusted off my hydrometer and my first brew from this book is bubbling away!

Great Information, Great Value!

I have enjoyed good beer for many years and have always thought of brewing my own. I received a brew kit for Christmas and immediately went to my Kindle for more information. This book was the result.

My knowledge of beer is novice at best, but my wine knowledge is fairly advanced. I enjoy good craft brewed beer, but don't know much about it like I do about wine. This book is beautifully written, and the author has a wine background so it fits perfectly to my situation.

The information given in this book is vast, but well written, and dollar for dollar, I don't think you will find a better value in a beginner beer brewing guide than this one. The author also cites a huge amount of additional material, including a vast array of online resources that will further your education of this awesome hobby. I would have gladly paid $25 for this guide, but $2.50 - it's a steal!
