Another helpful Dummies book

Arriving a few years late! I am a Vista addict and my friends know me as Vista Bill! Recently I ordered a refurbished desktop that runs Windows 7. I immediately feared a dislike for this operating system. But... I was wrong! I like W7! It is, as some say, an operating system similar to Vista and could be referred to as "Vista SE" (Second Edition). The transition has been very smooth and my 81 year old brain adjusted quickly. But there are features that I knew little or nothing about in W7. I knew I needed a "Windows 7 for Dunnies" book! The Dummies books have led me through all of my computer endeavors over the years. I did not waste my money! I randomly flipped to a page and I discovered a very helpful feature that W7 has and Vista didn't. Paid for itself quickly! If you are using any version of Windows, be sure to purchase a "Dummies" book to find out everything that the operating system has to offer.

stuff your mother never taught you or this book either.

I bought the book thinking that it would tell me how to enter the XP mode for windows 7. Unable to find it anywhere.
Book probably ok for dummies but if you have been there for a while you have already figured stuff out and except for the xp mode it does whatever you want.
I use my 300 icon desktop as a directory for quick reference to all the places I go or want to return to. Category first letter space and place of interest plus phone number.
No mention of stuff like that
Or using my Initial plus a space and the name I choose for my pictures and drawings I want to quickly locate in DOCUMENTS.
I use an initial for things others sent me to be remembered. Takes seconds to locate and include stuff in OUTGOING email.
BUT NOTHING ON XP MODE. ( It is in the operating system and you can find it but good luck making it work) Some folks claim to know how and suggest different paths but they don't do it for me.

Good book, probably better choices out there.

The For Dummies series as a whole is great for beginners but lacks in depth knowledge, so you are paying for partial information that you can actually understand (which is a bonus for many) but in any case you are missing information that other books would provide you if you could understand it. I bought this book for my cousin and she learned from it easily, but I feel you should get a higher grade of book and spend more time attempting to understand it. As a note to this review, most anything that can be found in the book, is available online for free if you can google your way around.

About the Author
Randy Stoecker is a Professor of Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, with a joint appointment at the University of Wisconsin Extension Center for Community and Economic Development. He is the moderator/editor of COMM-ORG: The On-Line Conference on Community Organizing and Development (http://comm-org.wisc.edu). His areas of expertise include community organizing and development, participatory action research/evaluation, and community information technology. He has been involved in a wide variety of community-based participatory research projects and participatory evaluations with community development corporations, community organizing groups, and community information technology programs across North America and Australia. He also helped build and evaluate university-community collaborations through the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation’s Learn and Serve America Community Research Project. Randy trains, speaks and writes extensively on community organizing and development, community-based participatory research, service learning, and community information technology. He is author of Defending Community (1994) co-author of Community-Based Research and Higher Education (2003), and co-editor of The Unheard Voices: Community Organizations and Service Learning (2009). What happens when your lover is supposed to be your enemey? Would you sacrifice your chance at happiness because of rumors and prejudice? These are just some of the hard questions that I was asking myself while reading Close Liaisons.

Mia is a naive college student that gets caught up in a dangerous situation when Korum, a visitor from another planet, takes an interest in her. From the first time they meet she feels physically drawn to him, but only five years after the Krinar race made themselves known to Earth there is still a lot of mistrust placed on the alien visitors. Korum doesn't help things with his blunt and territorial personality. His highhandedness and domineering ways had me scared yet drawn to him at the same time. I felt just as confused about my feelings for him as Mia did!

While Mia's naivety and Karum's pompous attitude towards humans had me cringing on more than one occasion I couldn't manage to put it down. The plot and steamy love scenes had me devouring the pages, and thinking about it long after I finished.

For the happily ever after seekers amongst us be aware that Close Liaisons has a satisfying, yet, happy for now, open ending. (Not open enough to feel frustrated, just enough to keep you excited for the next installment.)

My one and only complaint would have to be that during the sex scenes I felt a little put off by the very clinical terms used. Don't get me wrong, I don't want vulgar or flowery synonyms for the male and female form, but something about the very sterile terms thrown into hot (HOT, HOT!) sex scenes let me down.

With an original plot, and characters that won't leave your mind for some time to come I can't recommend Close Liaisons enough!

*You might think I'm a bit crazy, (seeing as there was no BDSM and Close Liaisons is a Sci-Fi Romance) but I can't help but see similarities between Mia/Korum and Anna/Christian from 50 Shades of Grey. A sheltered, small town college student meets a domineering slightly crazy/stalkerish, handsome man is the name of the game in this one. While Anna Zaires writing is much better (in my honest opinion) than James' I thought it might be helpful to point out the similarities to those that enjoy reading about slightly dangerous and all-consuming relationships.

Hard to fall in love with the characters

I want to give this story a higher rating, I really do, but I just can't justify it. The main character Mia is the typical female character in a romance novel; the shy virgin. The male is domineering and a perfect specimen. I had a hard time reading this book and getting involved in the characters lives. Mia was always complaining about her circumstances and Korum was constantly telling her what to do and how to do it. This book tried to romanticize a terribly domineering relationship.

The way it was written doesn't justify the $12.99 price tag either and I'm glad I got it for free. Very clinical terms were used in the sex scenes, but mixed with more raunchy terms. When the author switched to the raunchy words it felt forced and made it hard to read. The plot was interesting: Aliens created life on the planted and played a major role in evolution. Many things were left untouched, I felt the ending was rushed and left too open, even if this is part of a series. The author mentioned a few key pieces to the puzzle and I was interested in how they would pan out, but I was left with nothing and wondering what happened. I want to look at the next book in the series just to see if it was mentioned, but I don't think I can pay for the next one. I guess I will just be left wondering.

The heroine is probably the dumbest girl I have ever read about. SPOILER ALERT! She meets this alien who admits to stalking her and doing a background check on her but decides to sleep with him anyway, even though she fears for life. From then on he proceeds to cut her off from her friends and family, monopolizing her time. During this whole time she never loses the fear that he'd kill her. He becomes possessive and dominating thru out their whole so called relationship. Then she agrees to help humans rebelling against the aliens...she agrees even though she fears she may be falling for the alien who won't let her go places without him or dressed provocatively. I would like to blame her stupidity on being young but I'm sure if you have to refrain from going into fight or flight every time you saw your lover you should know the relationship isn't healthy. This book was so freaking dumb.

Witcher Series "Lady of the Lake" Book 5

A good continuity to the other books. I see people give it a poor rating and wonder what is their objective. The purpose of a good story is to transport you to that realm and give you an adventure. This book does a good job. Some parts are a little slow but they do give more color to the story and unless one is only looking for action, the story is fine. It does arrive to a lot of action and then finally tidy up of the various story lines. So all in all, a good read for those that like the Witcher stories.
I saw one criticism of the book where they felt it was disjointed. If one has a good memory there is no problem. Any author uses that technique to keep all the various players involved. It ends nicely and in an unexpected way. I will not say how but it was good enough that I did not second guess the conclusion regarding Ceri. This book does finish the story of Gerald though, you can look forward to that. Enjoy it, you will if you liked the other stories.

Perfection in print

As usual, Sapkowski knocks it out of the park. Only 100 or so pages in, but suspect I'll have it finished by the end of the week. Many have compared The Witcher story to Lord of the Rings and Sapkowski to Tolkien. My only regret is not knowing Polish so that I could read the series in it's native language.

I found the Beowulf movie to be fun but disappointing, primarily because I felt like the deviations from the original story violated the spirit of what Beowulf represents. I've always been a big fan of not only Beowulf but all of the great European sagas. Even though I had serious reservations about the movie's plot, the imagery of the world they were trying to create was much more in line with the visions I have playing before my eyes when I read the sagas. I bought the DVD of the movie and in some of the special features they showed concept art that I thought was really incredible, so I decided to take a chance on this book. I was not disappointed.

The quality is top-notch, both the manufacturing and the art within. I loved reading about their design process and watching the world unfold, in fact it made me feel much better about the movie when I understood what they were shooting for (although my complaints about the plot still stand). The art itself is what really shines here, once I read the words I was done with them, but the art continues to inspire me every time I see it. I've been through the book many times and I've never gotten bored, and it's made a great coffee-table book for guests who are all impressed as well.

The main drawback is the price. The retail price is $40, which is far more than I would pay for a book of this kind. I've seen it on sale for a few different prices here on Amazon, and I was lucky enough to get an excellent deal when I bought it. If you like fantasy art and the old sagas, wait for a price you can handle and I think you'll be pleased.

Lots of Concept Art

[[VIDEOID:30752511]]There's a lot to read in this book. The movie script was written by Neil Gaiman. I didn't realize that until I read the foreword. The 160-page book was hard covered and came with a dust jacket.

Captions accompanied the paintings and concept art in the book, explaining the process of design and rational for creation. No storyboards were found in the book. The pages were devoted mainly to matte paintings for conceptualizing movie scenes.

This movie was completely made in 3D using motion caption techniques, similar to those used in Polar Express. The 3D models renders shown were few and far in between. The technology behind was only mentioned in passing.

Character design drawings were there, but somehow I felt that they were not enough. Angelina Jolie only had 4 rendered stills in this book, and all were head profiles. No near nude 3D model were seen anywhere.

This book is mainly for Beowulf fans and concept artists.

Designing the Vikings of Denmark in detail

This fine book takes you into the core of designing the Movie Beowulf. While the movie is only a medium level entertainment, this book is surprisingly better than the movie in showing the details of design, from Beowulf himself to the dragon he faces at the end of the movie. You will see the different designs of helmets, swords, sets and landscapes as well as concept art. It is an excellent find.

Outstanding

This is a must in any urgent care/ER ....photos are excellent and just the right amount of written text to have a working review of almost everything one would see in these settings.It has always been easier to learn info. when it is hooked up to a photo. This is one of those that should and could be read cover to cover by any primary care/ER physician. It expands your differential greatly. I'm ordering my second one tonite.

This is a must for all medical students, doctors, and even parents. I read one case a day during my medical education and it has provided many benefits. I have even used it to save two trips to the ER (because the treatments at the ER would have been fluids and pain medication).

Blame the Spouse?

I purchased this book after reading reviews which portrayed this book as helpful in healing work after a betrayal. I found this book to be nothing close to the reviews. This book appears short on both empathy and any real insight - the book approaches affairs using the attitude of blame the betrayed spouse. The book repeatedly suggests that betrayals happen only after a spouse has been trying and trying to reach the other spouse who is unable or unwilling to be empathetic or nurturing. There are copious examples. One example is Ryan, who hadn't been looking for an affair but three years into his marriage he was "ripe for the plucking by any woman who showed the promise of affection." Dawn, Ryan's spouse was supposed to be a fun loving take it easy kind of gal but she turned out to be "ambitious, hard working highly organized person". As Ryan had "never seen this side of her" he discovered that Dawn has turned into "a tough taskmaster". Obviously the author feels strongly that Ryan was entitled - even thought the author herself states that Dawn never tried to hide her personality. Really?? Wow how sadly vested is the author in excusing infidelity and hide Ryan's ownership of his own behavior. Obviously in the author's opinion, Dawn fell down on the job and Ryan had every right to have an affair in reaction to his unmet needs (instead of communicating them to his spouse).
I finally put this book down when I reached the section entitled "The Top Six Solutions that Prevent Betrayal". Ms. Kirshbaum glosses over the devastation of betrayals, states that blame is not useful and then goes on to spread blame on the spouse. While a marriage has two sides and break downs in communications are typically shared, if someone cheats or lies that is a choice that is made by that person. Stating that there are ways to prevent someone else's choices, including betrayal is simply NOT a reasonable statement and it is highly inappropriate and inflammatory to suggest that the betrayed spouse has some kind of role in `causing' betrayal.
Restoring trust in relationships after betrayal takes serious work- honesty, transparency and building a new foundation. A cornerstone of this work must involve owning behavior and, if needed, making amends and understanding upset. Blaming and excusing behavior does not provide helpful guidance but continues to obfuscate the situation and prevent healing.
I strongly recommend skipping this book. There are many wonderful books on healing and re-building trust.
This is NOT one of them.

Probably good for most, but only moderately helpful for me

This book has a some good advice regarding restoring trust in a betrayal and a few other situations. If you are in a relationship that seems to have an element of mistrust on your part or your partner's part, I would recommend reading this book to see if you can get any useful words of wisdom. But, in my case, only some parts seemed relevant, and even those didn't give me any new or revolutionary advice.

Since this is a three-star review, I'll list a few pros and cons.

Pros:

The biggest by far is that my husband and I were able to have a couple of good discussions based on the book. I highlighted portions and wrote relevant notes on my kindle edition of the book, and it gave me good talking points for our discussion. It was written in a fair manner that allowed me to have a "cheat" and easily express things that I've been needing to say in a relatively nice way. She has multiple examples of "Say ______ in this situation." Those really helped me.

The writing style was easy to read, especially if you don't mind a few swear words. (And if you're going through a betrayal, you've probably used a few swear words yourself.)

Cons:

Our situation may be unique, but I kept feeling like the book didn't really apply to me. My husband is an addict and has a type of addiction that means that I'm being betrayed in big ways frequently. And because he's an addict, he tends to cope with life by doing things that betray me in small or medium-sized ways several times a week. This book seems to apply to one big betrayal (e.g., an affair) or maybe other smaller betrayals like someone who is unreliable or lies. But when your life is sort of centered around betrayals, this books doesn't quite feel relevant.

The author spends a lot of time having the betrayed figure out what contributed to the betrayal. On the one hand, I think it's a good exercise, and in normal cases, like an affair, that sounds good. But when you're a partner of an addict, it's important to realize that you don't really have any control over the addiction or your partner's compulsive behaviors. I can see why a few other people felt that she blamed the victim, but I think it's a good exercise to sit down and at least ask "why did I choose a partner who betrayed me?" even if you don't think you contributed to relationship dynamics that caused the betrayal.

Overall, I thought some stuff was helpful, but I didn't finish the book feeling that I could rebuild trust with my spouse because it didn't seem like our relationship fit well into the formulas or guidelines she gave.

Please give is 5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE

I turned to this book because I was in a situation in my relationship where trust had broken down. I could see we were headed for big trouble. I knew Mira's work from other books of hers where I'd fallen in love with her super-solid, very personal writing style. She writes like she really knows you. That's the way she wrote this book too. I felt like Mira had lived through what I was living through, except that she had also figured out how to prevent you from losing someone you love.

I LOVE YOU BUT I DON'T TRUST YOU walks you through everything you need to know to deal with trust issues in your relationship. She even has a chapter on how to figure out whether it's worth staying and trying to restore trust even though you're angry and scared.

Then Mira gets down to business. She has a number of chapters on how to recover from a major betrayal, which is what had happened in my relationship. She takes you through all the stages of restoring trust from the very beginning when you're just crazy with fear and anger to the end when you're beginning to find real forgiveness. Other stages have to do with finding out if the other person really cares about you. Finding out if you can solve your problems together...all the things that come up.

I really like what Mira did with this subject. I was afraid this was going to be a kind of cookbook: do this, do that. Instead Mira really believes that if there's something to the relationship to begin with, then restoring is very doable and happens faster than most people think. So what this book does is show you the most common mistakes people make that prevent trust from being restored, and then she shows you how to avoid those mistakes.

The whole time I kept wondering, how does Mira know me so well.

But she's not done yet. She goes on to show how to restore trust in other situations like when there's a real power imbalance between the two people, or when one person is unreliable, or when one person is mistrustful because he's been hurt in previous relationship. I felt a lot of this material also applied to my relationship.

By the time I finished the book I realized, wow, it really is all about trust, and there are a lot of relationships out there that need this book badly. If you have issues in your relationship, you have trust issues, and you need this book. I hope everyone will read it. I strongly recommend it.

I had high hopes......I was not disappointed.

In a departure from his zombie fiction roots, JL Bourne delves into a not-too-distant future where the mightiest nation on earth is brought to it's knees in a matter of weeks. Fans of apocalyptic-scenario fiction will not be disappointed. The writing flows very well and I found myself vividly imagining Max's experiences as they happened. This novel highlights in excrutiating detail what a complete breakdown of societal order would look like and it's not a pretty picture. Friends turn on friends. Law and order collapses. One finds himself wondering what he or she would do in the same scenario if faced with a totalitarian regime that controls all aspects of life. How far would you go to stand up for what you know is right? Tomorrow War examines that question in an action-packed work that left this reader examining how I could better prepare to take care of my family. I can only hope that this work of fiction does not play out in real life. If it does, consider yourself adequately warned............

Enjoyable

Interesting survival fiction. The speed of the collapse was surprising, but not unbelievable. The authors detailed explanation of weapons was spot on, and his knowledge of the military is obvious. The main characters were sufficiently developed and the story moved along quite well. I did find a freight train full of needed food and supplies, virtually untouched while sitting in in the midst of starving people, to be a stretch. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Excellent work!

As a fan of the Day by Day: Armageddon series, I was very excited to hear that JL Bourne would be releasing a novel that had a different scenery with a new character. I was hesitant to read this book at first because I thought that it may be too futuristic or that I would be disappointed after having read his previous works. All of the misconceptions I had created in my head about this book were false. I will start off by saying that I was completely enthralled by the story. JL Bourne did a fantastic job with this novel and I sincerely hope he releases another in the future!

There are some reviews I have read that were very narrow-minded and complained about the conspiracy theories and paranoia from the author in the story. In defense of the author, it is clearly written in the description on Amazon exactly what the book entails. I imagine those that left negative reviews about the book missed out on the part of the description that says, "a man struggles to survive after the US infrastructure collapses and martial law engulfs the streets of America.". JL Bourne made it clear as day what this book was going to be about, so don't fault him for the content of his fictional works based on the fact that you failed to read up on the description before you made the purchase.

The story was well-written and I found myself caring very much about the character and those around him. I found myself reminiscing about growing up in the hills of Tennessee and I could see myself in the main character's shoes. When Max was afraid, I was afraid. When Max expressed joy over a situation, I would smile in solidarity. I can't recommend this book enough to someone that follows current events and has an understanding of where we are as a society. You don't have to be a survivalist, soldier, or patriot to love this book. It was an eye-opening experience to see just how fast things can come to a halt and how much society changes as a result. This is a dystopian thriller that seems to have been influenced by other great works in similar genres, but it absolutely stands on its own at the same time!

I would have liked to see a little more detail put into Part Three of the book, but that is only a minor "want" for me. Despite that, the last part of the book was actually my favorite part of all! I won't delve into the book and give away spoilers, but I will say that I had goosebumps the entire time I was reading the last part. I found myself wanting to pull my rifle from my gun safe and climb atop a smoldering tank, screaming "Wolverines!". Buy this book, you will not regret it!
