I have gone back and forth on Tina's book, some I love, some I like. This was a like. The story was cute and the situation relate able, but how many books can one read about lovers loving from afar and one day being brought together due to kids.

Series of four

Series of four books about four brothers getting to know each other again. Liked the characters and the story line. The first book was free and it was impossible NOT to buy the rest to finish the story LOL The first book was not as well written as the other three, but it did make me want to read the others to see how it all ended. Not the best book I have read, but it was very enjoyable!!!

Dissociation is a bitch

This book helped me change my life. I realized a bit late in life (50ish) that I'd been dissociating for most of my life. Seemingly from trauma as a baby and child.

Judith Herman writes this book with such love, and nurturing and caring. I read it very slowly, with a highlighter. I could only read it a bit at a time, to give myself time to process. The book helped me understand things that had been mysteries to me my entire life! I hadn't made the PTSD connection before. Life has a way of illuminating things. At first, I wanted to track Dr. Herman down and see her for a few sessions. Too bad I don't have that kind of money :-) I found a PTSD group via MeetUps, and started working with the therapist who runs it and offers a sliding scale. I'm an integrated and joyful person these days.

Thorough Work on Understanding & Treating Trauma

Excellent, in-depth book on various types of trauma and the effects & treatments.
There is some political slant, but it is not the focus of the book. If you are serious about understanding trauma and people, this is an incredible book. I'm amazed how thorough it is. I'm amazed this much information can be in one book that is only 276 pages long and not a text book. It's well-written. There is some sophisticated vocabulary in it...Several times I had to look up words in my online dictionary to fully understand what the author is communicating. She is wonderfully gifted in her approach to this subject.

She starts with history, goes into trauma and various treatments. She delineates differences of acute trauma of a single event vs chronic traumas. She delineates further on how even just one good support can help someone with trauma, vs the results of someone experiencing trauma yet having no validating support. One of her key points is Chaper 6..."A New Diagnosis"... discussing that complaints of chronically traumatized people are not well-understood. For example:... "Survivors of child abuse who become patients appear with a bewildering array of symptoms....They may collect a virtual pharmacopeia of remedies: one for headaches, another for insomnia, another for anxiety, another for depression. None of these tends to work very well, since the underlying issues of trauma are not addressed".

She talks about getting the correct diagnosis. Investigating under the symptoms, thoroughly knowing the history. After that, the treatments are not just medication or psychotherapy. It's often both, but in a certain way... Safety first, then trauma work, then reconnection. It even goes into the strengths & support the therapist needs to treat people who have experienced trauma as well as details of individual vs group therapies. This book also discusses medications, but doesn't have a multitude of pages devoted to medications.

Please understand my description here is just a slight outline. Trauma and Recovery is an incredibly thorough and well-written work. It also includes many pages of its referenced sources.

The epilogue discusses many things including recent studies, advances and programs since the book was written 2 decades ago.

THE book to understanding trauma and depression

I have suffered from severe, debilitating depression for several years as a result of a trauma that is actually completely unrelated to what this book focuses on. Despite not having suffered trauma due to a rape, war or kidnapping, I found this book to be life-changing. I looked and searched endlessly for in-depth information to explain why I feel the way I do, and until this book, there was absolutely nothing out there. I came across countless webpages, medical literature, books, shows, blogs, essays, research papers, medical sites, and none explained WHY. A great deal of them focused on symptoms, but only general symptoms that could apply to a great deal of things. Besides, I already knew what my symptoms were. Another significant portion were dedicated to veterans and PTSD. I would read them, but again, they would still only discuss things on a very superficial basis. Blogs would talk about what medications people took, and arguments would ensue about who had the worse story. Medical literature would delve into explanations of which receptor and which brain lobe shrunk or expanded, and shock rates of rats. Why was there no simple explanation for why people feel these symptoms when suffering from trauma? I even asked my psychiatrist that I see twice a week -I would beg him to explain to me in detail what I had, why I had this, when I would get better, and why I experienced these awful symptoms. He would always respond the same way.... that I had "complicated depression," "complicated grief," and that I had "experienced a severe trauma." Any symptom I specifically asked about, was just a "symptom common in trauma." Was there just NO explanation?

Based on my past experience with being let down, I had little faith this book would be able to explain what I have been going through for several years now, ESPECIALLY because it focuses on trauma related to rape, war, kidnapping. "Trauma and Recovery," however, explains trauma in a way that relates to EVERYONE and explains it in GREAT DETAIL. The detail and depth was beyond any hope I had or anything I could have imagined. It brought up points that I did not even consider, and thoughts that made me learn a great deal about my affliction. In fact, this book brought to light answers and closure for issues that I had tried to address with my $300/hr psychiatrist for the past 3 years. I thought to myself, "wtf?! what took my doctor so long and why has he been torturing me about this???!" Yes - this book WILL drum up emotions, and it did cost me plenty of tears and opening of wounds that were supposedly healed over, however, I definitely needed to understand the answers to these questions in order to move on.

This is an ideal book to have your family, spouse, significant other, or other supportive individual read. A great struggle for me, and one that has brought me much pain, is feeling as though I constantly have to explain myself and my actions/affliction to my family. They are actually the most supportive people anyone could ever hope for, yet they STILL can't understand what it is that I am going through or why I do the things I do. It is an awful feeling. I begged them to read this book, they didn't unfortunately, but I truly believe that if you love someone who is going through PTSD, depression/trauma/grief, you would show amazing support in reading this to help them.

In terms of what I have, and how this helped me.... I have experienced ups/downs, cycles of feeling great, then feeling terrible, not being able to get out of bed or my home for days even weeks, withdrawing socially, unable to work for several years, feeling unbelievably overwhelmed by the littlest of things, losing track of time, barely able to keep up with anything, uninterested in anything, no form of romantic relationships whatsoever, flashbacks to the event(s), extreme fatigue, uncontrollable sobbing, anxiety, hopelessness, chest pain, accelerated aging, feeling like something in me has permanently changed and I'm not "me", indifference, guilt. This is the foremost work in bringing to light the underlying cause(s) for these symptoms and why/how trauma affects us differently that just plain depression.

Very interesting book with poor publisher quality control

The book itself is a very interesting read and a good introduction on the topic. It's detailed enough that you can understand the concepts without everything going over your head the first time you read through it. I would give it a higher rating, but unfortunately the publisher's quality control leaves something to be desired. Halfway through the book, the remaining pages are bound upside-down (see image). This is the first time I have ever seen such a thing in a textbook and unfortunately it makes the book very difficult to continue reading. You basically have to retrain yourself to now read books from the right page to the left page, which is unorthodox and inconvenient.

This is a very nice introduction to the concepts involved in modeling and measuring the radar cross section of scattering bodies. It is complete in that just about every method and phenomenon is discussed. However it is lacking in enough details that it could not be used alone to begin developing RCS models and simulation. It is more of a phenomenology text with many valuable insights. While I would recommend this text be prepared to supplement it with a couple others.

Best book on RCS technology

Knott, Shaeffer, and Tuley don't tell us everything about stealth, naturally, but within the limits of a single, unclassified volume this is about as balanced and comprehensive an overview as could be wished. The approach is physical rather than purely mathematical. A good background in electromagnetics is needed for full mastery of the material, but a more limited knowledge of electricity and magnetism will still allow good basic comprehension. Even full mastery of the book won't make you a qualified RCS engineer, but it provides a good basis for further study as well as an excellent resource for those who need an overall design and technology perspective, or must communicate clearly with specialists. I've consulted it over and over in the 15 years since I acquired a copy of the first edition. The second edition has important improvements, although the first edition remains useful in many areas.

Fun Read!

This was a really nice, easy read. I say "easy" because the character development was smooth, the story ups and downs were not far fetched and the sexy bits were really well integrated into the plot. The only negative is that I wanted more. Both characters were so likeable; I didn't want their story to end. One missing element: I would have liked to hear more details on Sam's backstory. All in all this is worth the purchase!

As a person who reads on average four books a week, I have little time for lengthy blurbs or covers that don’t clue me in on the content. On that note, the sexy cover and short blurb for Heart’s Surrender drew me in. Thankfully the story met my high expectations, and then some.

Samantha and Gillian are complex and likeable leading ladies. The story starts with a hiss and roar, a panty melting one at that, and the pace didn’t let up. Now, now, I’m not just talking about the sex, these two ladies don’t come without baggage.

The scene at the caf� was gut-wrenching, and for a time, I wondered how these ladies could possibly move beyond it.

Gillian is a widow, and comes from wealth. The animosity she feels for her deceased husband and mother-in-law is palpable, and understandable. On saying that, I liked that she didn’t project that onto her children. I liked it even more when Gillian finally spoke her mind and made a stand against the old battle-axe.

Sam is a home handywoman with a painful past. Her relationship with her mother is strained to say the least. Sam’s sister, Victoria, is somewhat in the middle of the mother/daughter relationship. Offering support to Samantha without preaching.

At times subplots bore me to tears, but that didn’t happen in this story. The trip to the zoo was a wonderful outing. I learned a thing or two, especially about Meerkats.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story… despite the distracting… ellipses. The plot is well developed, as are the characters. It made me feel and care which is the sign of great story telling, in my humble opinion.

Upon finishing this story, I immediately went searching for more work by this author. As of now it appears this is her only novel. I do hope she plans on writing more.

What a sweet romance!

This was a perfect book for a night reading on the couch.

Sam is a smoking hot butch who hooks up with gorgeous Gillian for a one night stand but... The sex is amazing and sultry, but this book is so much more than that. Both women come with baggage and fears but yearn for peace and love. Ms Weidmann leads us on their journey through ups and downs and life gone sideways. It had just enough strife to make it interesting but not so much that it was unpleasant. I have already put it in my read again pile.

Insanely funny

Allan Karlsson climbed out of the window without any particular destination im mind. He just wanted to escape the party celebrating his 100th birthday. Not a slave to fashion, he wasn't even wearing shoes, just some brown slippers. He made his way to the bus station and got on a bus with a stolen suitcase. Then the fun really begins. Not only do we learn about what happened after he climbed out of the window, but also about many of the adventures in his very long life - all of them highly improbable, zany, and hilarious. Especially ingenious is the way the author connects Allan with some of the famous historical people of the 20th century, among them Harry Truman, Mao Tse Dong, Josef Stalin, and Lawrenti Beria. And you are going to love Herbert (no, not Albert) Einstein, not to mention his wife Amanda.
This is a wonderful, crazy, fun-filled book.

An absurd century

REVIEW: THE ONE HUNDRED-YEAR OLD MAN

The back cover of this witty and droll novel compares it with Forest Gump but that is a very superficial comparison. Jonassun's novel is much deeper, incisive and more relevant than Gump. The author takes the opportunity to use a centenarian's exploits not merely to place him alongside famous figures or events but to draw incisive caricatures of a wide array of historical figures from Harry Truman to Mao Tse Tung, Joseph Stalin, Charles DeGaulle and Richard Nixon. Each caricature is well-drawn, according to the author's disposition and each contains kernels of accuracy, although there is much left to debate.

But debate is not really what this book is all about. This is a whimsical, absurdist adventure that is amenable to quibbling at every turn. But why bother? Why not just have fun and go along for the ride? That's what I did and despite my penchant for historical accuracy, I am a stickler on that count, I managed to put it aside and just have a good time, a snicker here and there, and an occasional laugh. This book is amusing, quick read and best of all, downright first-class entertainment. So toss aside your politics, save your quibbles for a different book and just have fun with an impossibly unbelievable centenarian who manages to get into and out of a myriad situations, each one of which would be the death of any real life character.

Quirky, lighthearted and funny

The Hundred Year Old Man is a quirky, funny and unusual novel which not only provided some light entertainment, but also brought back memories of history lessons at school all those years ago - maybe I should have paid more attention then! Had our teacher presented the dry facts of major political events in the same fashion Jonas Jonasson manages to do by re-writing the history books with the help of his very unusual hero Allan, we would certainly have shown more interest.

There were many moments when I laughed out loud during reading this novel. I could vividly picture Allan climbing out of his window on the morning of his 100th birthday and escaping the nursing home - I bet that many hundred year olds biding their time in such a facility have entertained thoughts of doing the same! But Allan is no ordinary hundred year old (if such a thing exists - all the hundred year olds I have met have been extra-ordinary and amazing people). He is also blessed with a mischievous spirit, a wicked sense of humour, an addiction to vodka and 9 lives. Blissfully ignorant as far as politics are concerned, he is blessed with wonderful common sense and the ability to take each person at face value, which lands him in the most bizarre situations with the most unusual characters. Jonasson's imagination has no limits where his protagonist is concerned - as the novel progresses and Allan's past is revealed, he makes an appearance and plays a leading role in some of the most fundamental political events in last century's history. With his colourful (and explosive) background it is no wonder that the hundred-year-old Allan manages to get into trouble as soon as he has left the nursing home behind.

I have read several reviews which compared this novel to Forrest Gump. Indeed, Allan's involvement in certain key historical events brings back memories of the movie, but that is where the similarity ended for me. There is nothing sentimental or deep in this quirky tale of adventure and mischief, except that perhaps we should take a closer look at our senior citizens instead of labelling them as simply "old". Allan may be advanced in years, but he could give most of us a run for our money, and his rich personal background makes most other lives pale in comparison. I loved Allan's outlook in life - whatever is meant to happen will happen. Even in the face of his own death (several times) he is not worried or stressed.

Jonasson's novel made a delightful change from the seriousness of life - this tale is light-hearted and fun, finds the bright side of most situations and doesn't take itself too seriously. By defying the boundaries of truth as we know it, Jonasson has created a light, enjoyable and funny story which can be enjoyed by all ages and both genders alike. My husband is currently reading it, and I'm sure he will get as many chuckles out of it as I did - if maybe at different things. I loved Jonasson's writing style - with his black sense of humour, no-nonsense language and keen observations, his statements hit exactly the right spot. Make sure to have a glass of icy cold vodka ready when you read this book - to toast the hero of the story, who would surely appreciate the sentiment.
