Excellent sequel to Jumper and Reflex

Even if you've never read Jumper or Reflex, or if you've only seen the movie version of Jumper (Special Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray], then I think you'll find this story quite enjoyable -- it stands well enough on its own, and explains important plot items from previous books. If you're a fan of the movie you might be confused about plot differences, particularly regarding one character's mother (she dies in one and lives in the other). The story is strong enough that even coming in cold to the series, it's a compelling page-turner. For fans of the series, this is simply a must-have book!

What's It About?
In Jumper, teenage Davy learned he can teleport. In Reflex, adult Davy is kidnapped - and his wife discovers she, too, can teleport. Now in Impulse their teenage daughter learns she, too, has developed the talent - which means an end to home schooling, which she hates, and a chance to get to know other kids at a real high school. But the enemies her parents made in the first two books, who seek to exploit their talents at any cost, are an ever-present fear for her family, so she must keep her secret. The nature of being a new kid in a dysfunctional high school (aren't they all?) makes this a challenge, of course.

What's it Like?
This book is not as intense as Reflex, but feels much closer in tone and pace to the original Jumper novel. There's a lot of exploration of what it's like to be a teenager (or the parent of one) who doesn't quite fit in, but has a secret she must keep in order to protect herself and those around her. There are delightful interactions between the parents, put there for those of us who grew up reading these characters and, like them, have kids of our own. There are painfully accurate interactions between parents and teenager, with the added drama of being able to end an argument at will, by simply teleporting away. The internal thoughts of the teenager and her interaction with peers seem a little more adult to me than is totally believable, but the character is easy to love and identify with (unlike some teenage girls in popular fiction). There's a romance, a bully, risk to friendship, and - eventually - to life and limb.

Conclusion
As in the other books in this series, the talents of our protagonists are compelling and drive the story - yet never become the sole focus. Instead, the interactions and relationships between the characters are the focus, with Jumping a powerful catalyst that forces the stakes to be raised.

A Teenage Superhero Who Never Thinks Of Herself As One

I'd read Jumper and loved it. The film adaptation was pretty good too. I enjoyed Reflex, the sequel, and the way Gould didn't just rinse and repeat, but actually 'jumped' the story and characters forward. But Impulse blew me away. Gould 'jumped' the characters yet again, but this time he added a new primary viewpoint protagonist, Cent, the teenage daughter of Davy and Millie from the earlier books. Not only that, he made Cent a complex, extremely likeable yet flawed character, and added a bunch of other equally complex and interesting characters like Joe, Jade, Tara and, hmm, more that I don't want to mention here for fear of spoilers.

And then he went and topped it all by 'jumping' his own storytelling forward to a whole new level. Impulse is basically a superhero origin story in which nobody ever uses the word superhero. Which is itself so refreshing, in an age when superheroes are coming out of the woodwork. And he does it in a way that is even more well developed, action-packed, and dramatically rewarding as the earlier books, but with this added bonus of a terrific new female superhero protagonist.

Cent's story is a terrific one, and Impulse is an awesome SF thriller. It's classified as a YA novel and it certainly qualifies as one, but it's YA in the same way that Heinlein's 'juveniles' were YA - that is to say, it uses the protagonist's age and innocence to great advantage, while leveraging a very exciting and entertaining superhero thriller.

I just hope Steven Gould keeps writing more Jumper novels! More Cent, and anyone else you want to throw in the mix. Pretty please!

Bit of a step back from the previous novels

Loved this entire series of books by Steven Gould. This latest book is a little more slow going than the others as it revolves more around a teenage girl's life rather than Davy and Millicent. While they still play an important part in the book, they are not the main characters. As with the other books in the series, this one unveils a new "trick" that the jumpers find out they can do which aids them in their fight. While this seems a bit cliched, it fits well into the story. Overall, the story takes a while to get going and grab you, and then when it finally does you're strapped in for a fun ride.

It's a very short, fast, fun way to remember all 44 presidents. It also adds additional info about different presidents not just the order they held office. Right after I was done reading I could write down all presidents in order and able to answer trivia questions about each. I'm a big fan of Kevin Horsley's methods

JANET BURROWAY is the author of plays, poetry, essays, children’s books, and eight novels including The Buzzards, Raw Silk (runner up for the National Book Award), Opening Nights, Cutting Stone, and Bridge of Sand. I have long used Janet Burroway's IMAGINATIVE WRITING: THE ELEMENTS OF CRAFT as the textbook in my introductory workshops, starting with the first edition. The participants' anonymous evaluations have been highly favorable.

The fourth edition adds several new short stories, creative nonfictions, poems, dramas and drops some of those in the third edition, keeping the overall page count in the book about the same. The new stories added are by Tobias Wolff, Jamaica Kincaid, Ursula Le Guin and others; new examples of creative nonfictions are from Michael Chabon, David Sedaris, and others. Also new are nearly half of the poems and dramas.

Some of the additions are from the most widely anthologized. That's good for beginners: if you haven't read them before, they are great additions; good for instructors: if you have read them before, they cut down your preparation time.

Tobias Wolff's "Bullet in the Brain" is an excellent example of innovative craft.
The extended use of what the main character did not remember in his dying moments to show-and-tell the back-story and the one childhood event that he did remember to reveal the theme of the story. The theme, in my reading: the protagonist in his childhood had great love for the music of language, which got vitiated by his choice of profession, that of a book critic - a 'deformation professionelle' characterized by habitual cynical language.

The expository sections of Poetry and Drama are expanded. Particularly helpful will be the first and final drafts of Elizabeth Bishop's poem "One Art" and Patty Seyburn's "Anatomy of Disorder."

In the Revision section, Burroway wisely retains an example from her own work because only the author can authoritatively know her changing intentions in the re-drafting process.

As in the earlier editions, the author invites instructors to email her with suggestions. This feedback has helped the author clarify exposition and enhance her book with every new edition. It's currently a required textbook at UCBerkeley and numerous other creative-writing programs world-wide.

Based on my experience of using this book as the main text in writing workshops, I recommend reading Chapter 6, "Story" first: "As readers, we will always, if the story succeeds, have our capacity for empathy enlarged by having lived in the character's skin for the duration. Every story is in this important human sense a 'love story'." (p 167)

Janet Burroway's unique multigenre approach, lucid expositions, and "Try This" prompts make IMAGINATIVE WRITING the top recommendation for learning the elements of the creative-writing craft.

If you are buying this book for self-study, I recommend the THIRD edition as the selection of stories is just as good and a used copy will cost much less at amazon.com

The THIRD Edition of the Classic Intro to Creative Writing
The following is an addendum to my review of the second edition that was posted on 8 April 2007.)

Janet Burroway's "Imaginative Writing: The Elements of Craft, 3rd Edition" adds several new short stories, nonfictions, poems, dramas and drops some of the ones in the second edition, keeping the overall page count of the book about the same. Notably enhanced are the chapters on drama and on poetry. The drama section includes several examples of a newly popular genre, the ten-minute play.

Although marketed as a textbook for Creative Writing 101, this book can serve as an excellent primer for self-teaching. On completing the brief "try this" exercises included, you'll acquire a good understanding of the craft elements and be able to judge whether the comments on your work by other apprentice writers in a workshop or your friends are on the mark or not. Beware that even positive, flattering comments ("I loved this image...") can mislead you.

Unlike the reviews to date, my review focuses on the current edition, not the first edition.

The overall organization of the book is unchanged. The first part comprises chapters on the five elements of craft common to all genres of imaginative writing: Image; Voice; Character; Setting; Story. The second part comprises chapters on the four genres: Creative Nonfiction; Fiction; Poetry; Drama.

Among the new examples in the second edition are the following: contemporary short stories such as Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies," William Trevor's "Sitting with the Dead," Ron Carlson's "Big foot Stole My Wife"; contemporary poems by Billy Collins, Annie Tibble, and Henry Reed: contemporary creative nonfiction by Gayle Pemberton, Bill Capossere, and William Kittredge; contemporary drama by Carol Real, Jim Quinn, and Josh ben Friedman.

Also new are a series of developmental exercises, located in the basic techniques section at the end of each chapter. This series is designed to facilitate readers "toward a finished" draft of a short story.

Burroway has wisely retained many of the exemplary selections from the first edition such as Charles Baxter's "Snow," Donald Barthelme's "The School," and Robert Olen Butler's "Missing."

Its lucid expositions, brilliant examples, and "Try This" prompts make IMAGINATIVE WRITING the best basic texbook for teaching yourself. Experienced writers, too, can benefit from a study of this book's unique multi-genre approach.

Great book!

I bought this book as an aspiring writer to improve my skills. After reading the first couple of chapters, I am very impressed with the teaching style. It breaks down the lessons, has several exercises, and explains why certain things do and don't work with examples. I have already started to see certain aspects differently in my mind when I look at writing. Great book!

I have made it through a quarter of the book and I can say I have learned from it and it is improving my creative writing skills. I would recommend it.

Worth the trouble

One thing the other reviews don't quite emphasize enough- these exercises are just plain ol' unpleasant to do. It is not fun to sit in a lunge with one leg held out to the side and slowly move it up and down a few inches 50-100 times. The only justification for this torture is that it works. I don't have any interest in exercise per se, just in being strong and looking as good as possible. (And not limping around like Quasimodo the first three hours of the day) I have been doing these exercises for three months. I have lost 5 pounds, and look like I have lost 20. I do 50 repetitions rather than 100 and do it 4-5 times a week, as it is less boring for me to do less more often. It helps to memorize the sets and then review the book or video every once in a while to make sure one is doing it correctly and not dropping any of the exercises. Read the instructions carefully initially so you don't hurt yourself doing it wrong.

Simply the BEST - BUT ...

First of all, these exersizes are brilliant. I have tried all different kinds of (more modern) methods, but I keep coming back to Callanetics. If you want a leaner, more beautiful body, this is the book for you. Callanetics is simply the BEST workout program around and will probably last forever.
But! And here comes the big BUT. This book might be a tad misleading if you expect instant results. It promises 10 years younger in 10 days, well, probably that will work for some, but definitely not for the out-of-shape-not-in-the-early-twenties-anymore-type-of-person. When I started Callanetics, years ago now, I was quickly deterred by the slow results and quit the program after the promised 10 hours. I told every one the program didn't work.
Until I decided to start again, one step at the time now, and stick with it for a few months. Then, suddenly, the results came and I did indeed get a trim(mer), slim(mer), strong(er) body. No miracles mind you, but enough results to be noticeable.
So yes, get the book today, but make sure you stick with it for at least a few months before you render your judgement!

good to have, along with the video tapes.

A great companion book for the Callanetics video tapes, it will give you a little background on Callan, and how she created her unique method of exercise.
The photos are astounding. Chapter 4, "Portfolio of Proof", has untouched back and profile views of bikini clad women, as well a two men, as they progress from class to class. There is a sequence of photos from the 1st to the 19th class on one woman that shows an amazing transformation.
There is a smoothness to the body toning. Think Cyd Charisse, not Martina Navratilova. If you want that "super athlete" look, Callanetics is not for you. There is no bulk in the results, no accentuated muscles...just a longer, leaner line.
The book takes you through the entire 1-hour program, demonstrated by Callan's students. Chapter 16 is "The 15 Minute Maintenance Plan", and there are chapters on "Taking Care of Your Back", "You're Never Too Old to Have a Fabulous Body", and more.
The final chapter is "The Advanced Program", and it's demonstrated by Callan, with her remarkable strength, flexibility, and grace. The woman is a marvel.
Callanetics has been around for 2 decades, but I just heard about it recently. I've been doing the "Quick Callanetics" for a week, and already feel taller, stronger, and more agile, after only 20 minutes a day. Also, though the exercises are very hard and "burn", one doesn't get muscle soreness afterwards, and more importantly, I haven't felt even a twinge of pain in my knees, which has always been a problem with other exercise programs...so Callanetics is (better late than never !) a thrilling find for me.

The winner of Spain's 1978 National Prize for Literature, Gaite's postmodern novel interweaves dreams and fantasies with autobiography and Spanish history, resulting in a book that is complex and elusive, but more than worth the effort. The main character, partially based on the author, narrates with an artful, mystifying self-reflectiveness that would be irritating in less sure hands but that works quite magically in this multi-layered tale. The plot is deceptively simple: the protagonist (also a writer) is awakened from sleep by a male journalist who ostensibly has come to interview her about her work. The author begins to muse about her past, but is interrupted by a phone call from the journalist's female companion, who becomes an integral part of the story. At the end the writer's grown daughter awakens her mother, but it is not clear whether the interview belonged to dream, fantasy, memory or reality. Several intriguing themes run throughout: multi-dimensional time and memory, the effects of the repressive Franco regime on the Spanish middle class, and the conscious, and more mysterious, aspects of the writing process. Gaite also provides an acute analysis of the theatrical performances at the heart of male/female relations, and a touching, honest, semi-autobiographical portrait. The language in this fine translation is sensual and lucid: the tastes, smells and customs of postwar Spain are vivid, and emotions, and ideas have a dream logic that is both evocative and precise. Unintelligible in any language

I bought the English translation, because we are studying this work in a Spanish literature class, and I found it to be very difficult going. Turns out that it wasn't the Spanish that was the problem, it was the "novel"!! It is a confusing and obscurantist navel-gazing exercise, which is, however, full of clever and witty asides, and insights into life in Franco's Spain. Why should anybody want to read a book about the writer writing a book, which is probably the very same book that s/he now holds in his or her hand? Narcissism is not a compelling trait.
