About the Author
Toshihisa Funabashi received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Nagoya University, Aichi, Japan, in 1975. He received the Doctor degree in electrical engineering from Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan, in 2000. In 1975, he joined Meidensha Corporation, Tokyo, Japan, where he was engaged in research on power system analysis and also distributed generation applications in power systems. Since April 2014, he is a professor of Nagoya University, Aichi, Japan. Prof. Funabashi is a Chartered Engineer in the UK, a member of IET, a senior member of IEEE and a member of IEE Japan, as well as member of the editorial board of Elsevier’s journal Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks.

This is a poorly written book that is vastly overpriced. English is not the native language of the authors, and so the publisher should have assigned an excellent editor to the production team who could have turned the awkward wording into decent, readable English, but unfortunately it seems as if the publisher skimped on the production budget. In addition some of the chapters, while looking promising from the chapter title, have fairly sketchy and high level information that is basically useless for trying to understand the topic. Other chapters have useful information, but it requires considerable effort to tease it out of the awkward phrasing and uninformative figures.

Best Beginner's Book I Have Tried (and I've tried a lot!)

I have been playing (very loose use of the word "playing" by the way) guitar for about 3 years and have a shelf full of beginner books. I finally gave up and paid for lessons for 2 years, so consider myself somewhat proficient but far from good. Even with lessons there was something missing in my jump to the next level...and that's where this book comes in. I tune into Justin's online videos every now and then, and soon realized I knew a lot about different things about playing but just couldn't connect the dots to get me to the level.

So why a "beginner's" book? True, this book starts at the basics, as if the reader just bought their first guitar. And honestly I wish I had started here, Justin's methods are different than anything I've tried. The course doesn't just throw you into music theory (I can't read sheet music, and at age 42 I don't have time to learn a new language!), and it doesn't give you chord diagrams and expect you to know how to translate that into a song. The book does give you chord information but includes exercises to help establish familiarity with common chord changes - and more importantly how to make those changes with efficiency of movement. I combined this with Justin's Beginner's Songbook (highly recommend both books) which uses songs to reinforce the lessons the Beginner's Course. After a week of using both books my rhythm has improved and my chord changes have become smoother - the hardest part was breaking bad habits I had established before. The techniques in this book are top notch and the information is accessible to true beginners (and those without classical music training) - but it still takes practice! Buying the book alone won't make someone Jimmy Page, but with time and effort I progressed more than with any other system I tried.

I'm not one for long reviews, but I spent a lot of money on other books and expensive lessons that got me nowhere (to be fair, a beginner can only get so far on half hour lessons once a week, and it's just not practical for some people to shell out hundreds of dollars a month on what amounts to a hobby). I'm planning on going back to lessons, but not before I've finished this course and the second course (I'm already sold on it just based on this book) so I have a firm base of knowledge and ability.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT Nowhere is the belief that we are what we eat held more steadfastly than among the brethren of the Rastafari. There is good reason to shun additives, preservatives, all processed foods, all that is generally eaten which has no direct root in nature. For this reason the Rastafari always cook without added salt, a practice commonly known as 'Ital'.

TO BE IRIE IS TO BE AT ONE WITH NATURE
The state of being at one with nature, being at peace with oneself, with all the things around us is of the highest states. This is the natural high, and as it derives in music and chant, so it derives in good health and vitality, in the nature of the food we eat, the fruits and vegetables, the spices and the herbs.

ITAL IS VITAL
In Rasta cooking the natural flavour of each dish is embellished through the use of spices and herbs which compliment the natural essence of the ingredients. All care should be taken to preserve the natural purity of ingredients used in the preparation of 'Ital' food. This caring should extend from the preparation and serving, to eating. For this reason the devout brethren of the Rastafari will use only utensils made from natural materials, stone, earthenware. The matching of herbs or spice with vegetable is the result of a long and skilfully laid tradition originating from the African ancestry and cultural heritage of the Rastafari.

The herbs and spices are also fruits of the earth and are as such essential ingredients to the diet of the vital man.

The most widely used of the spices is pepper, fresh ripe peppers. The most piquant of the spices.

The most widely used herb is marijuana, use of which is prohibited by law in the UK and a number of other countries. It is, however, the strongest of the herbs, and in the tradition of the Rastafari unlimited by dish. It sweetens and embellishes all, baked, boiled, fried or stewed.

The spirit of Rasta is everywhere. As western man has set himself against the many essentials at the nature from which he was born, so he yearns to find peace with the world, to arrest the destruction of things which are natural, of himself.

Where better to halt the destruction but at the point where the body interfaces with nature, with the food we eat. Eat Rasta

But they are great, easy recipes :)) I read it almost daily. Full of vegan recipes. My carrot fritters came out tasting terrible though.. We'll see.

Not Recommended for Anyone

Not recommended! This book has just enough information in it to avoid being a complete waste of time but much of it is misinterpreted through the author's own biases or downright dangerous. The author had a good opportunity to explore a fascinating subject and failed utterly at doing so.

Scholarship is poor; the book lists a bibliography but seldom contains footnotes. The few footnotes listed largely refer to one outdated publication. Her attempt to include in her writings "all werebeasts" is a complete failure. Most of the materials either refer to werewolves or make contemptuous and uneducated assumptions about other types of animal totems.

Organization of material is poor and the book needed serious editing before going into publications. Large sections of chapters repeat information already given nearly verbatim and at least two chapters are repeats of information given in earlier chapters. A lot of the information conflicts with information given earlier and, as there are no sources to consult, it leaves the reader utterly confused.

Much of the information is downright dangerous. The author discourages any sort of therapy to deal with emotional problems and takes a hostile attitude toward anyone with psychiatric or physical problems, declaring them inferior and therefore unable to assimilate any of the information. At one point, she seems to be implying that a shapeshifter can avoid being shot simply because the bullet and the shapeshifter are not on the same plane. The last section of the book is most dangerous, as she recommends the use of several herbs known to be poisonous even if handled correctly. These are herbs which many experienced magic users will not touch and which experienced herbologists and holistic healers avoid. She also fails to identify what is obviously a description of the datura family of plants. A layperson could easily find the true information regarding the 'fabled' moonflower. This too is dangerous as there have been known poisonings and fatalities in gardeners who simply handled the plant.

An OK Book

The Magic of Shapeshifting is an interesting book but I really do not think it is worthy of the hype that surrounds it. I have had this book suggested to me by several sources and people seem to think highly of it, but I just don't see it. It would be better if this book was marketed for what it really is, a book about shapeshifting folklore, though even the folklore can be questionable at times. The author claims that she truly believes in shapeshifting on all levels, spiritual, mental and even physical. But she also says that she has no experience with doing this nor does she know anyone that can/has done such. Then she tries to tell you how to do it, even after she admits that she has never done it. This book just feels like the author wrote down the things she has heard about shapeshifting throughout her life with no real experience or much real research just to put out a book. One of the things that really gets me is that she obviously has a fondness for wolves, which she does admit, so much so at the expense of other animals. She talks about characteristics to practice if you wish to be closer to the wolf. Then the only thing she has to say about cats is that they are vain, so to connect to cats one should act vain and worry about their appearance. If you really like wolves and want to read some folklore about shapeshifting then you might want to check this book out. But there are much better books out there on this subject and I would recommend Ted Andrews' books (Animal Speak in particular) over this one if you have to choose.

AWFUL!!!

This book was so awful. Thank god I bought it used and cheap. The author talks as some elitest preaching down to her worshipers. Some claims she makes are so ridiculous, avoid black cats cause "they attract unsavory spirits and bad energy". Im soooo thankful I read this AFTER I read Lupa's book because this book is so discouraging I wouldnt have pursued animal magic at all after reading it. The author seems most concerned with the EXACT definitions to the types of shapeshifters, she spent way too long describing the details of what makes one an integrated, as opposed to non-integrated as opposed to hereditary as opposed to classical, physical bla bla bla . The voice of this book is so immature and insecure, like shes trying to make sure YOU know that she herself is a genuine shapeshifer. It comes across as very unfriendly , the author is one of the popular cool people and YOU ARENT!!!
Id say read Lupa's books they are so much more helpful and supportive and full of useable information.

Suviving Isolation of the Heart

This abridged version of Steinbeck's grim novella about a boy's love for his new pony is beautifully packaged by Creative Education, Inc, in 1993. Dedicated to "the continuation of fine literature for readers of all ages" this short book (64 page) presents the story in non chapter format--highlighting Jody's relationship with Gabilan, (the title red pony), his taciturn father, Carl, and the horse-wise ranch hand, Billy Buck. His mother's role is shadowy--gentle but ineffective to relieve his loneliness and unspoken heartache.

Ten-year-old Jody Tiflin receives a wonderful, unexpected gift from his undemonstrative father--a red pony, complete with fancy saddle. His entire world changes now that he has an object on which to lavish care and affection. His goal is to train, break and ride the pony, but an unexpected rainy day results in serious illness for the pony. (One wonders why his mother did nothing to protect the little fellow.) Can clever Billy Buck doctor Gabilan back to health? Set in the stark country around Salinas, CA, this story tugs at the heart, as Jody comes of age late in the year-the year of the red pony. (q.v.) Sober, thought-provoking, no-holds barred storytelling by an American master.

The best social media marketing textbook available

There are a number of books available on this topic but I have found that Social Media Marketing may be the best! I have used this book as the text for teaching a social media marketing course at a major university on three occasions. This is a great read, full of examples and information that is valuable to the reader (in my case, students) who are eager to learn more about how marketers can leverage and benefit from using social media. In particular, there is a solid outline on how to create a social media marketing plan. Again, very valuable and this template may be applied from small to mid-size businesses to an enterprise. Students have made very positive comments on Social Media Marketing 2nd edition, and found it to be very useful in developing social media marketing plans. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who needs to learn how to leverage social media.

This textbook is not nearly as bad as the dozens of others that I have had ...

This textbook is not nearly as bad as the dozens of others that I have had to use in the past. Rather than just throwing information out at you in a dull, linear fashion it ties the material together with pop culture examples to help connect the what we're learning to the real world. Even the info itself is written in a more natural and fun way than the standard textbook. I'm only giving it 4 stars because at the end of the day it's still a textbook, so it's in my blood to have some sort of dislike for it.

Inspiring Text

If you are a social media novice, this is a great educator to how and why it works in your favor. If I had more time, I would read it outside of the bare minimal that I need to complete assignments in my online Social Media Marketing course. The chapters are brief and it is lightweight. If you are short on time and you are allowed open book tests, the end of chapter summaries are a great overview of the chapter without having to read each chapter in entirety.

This book is based on the true story of John Emil List, a mild-mannered accountant and religious zealot who cold-bloodedly slaughtered his entire immediate family execution style in 1971. The author states that she "novelized" this book and that is obvious. But the facts are shown albeit with a lot of "padding", information she couldn't possibly have known, such as conversations within the family, etc. Still, having researched the story, I found this book to be truly entralling. List was a Mama's boy of the first degree. Born to a woman who married her own cousin's father, they were devout Lutheran German immigrants who lived in their own world in Michigan. Mother List, (it was her maiden name AND her married name), never let young John, her only child, be a boy or a man, for that matter. His dysfunctional childhood and upbringing almost certainly played a large part in what he did to his family. His wife, who had been married before to a soldier who died in the Korean war, had contracted syphilis from him. She met John as a lonely and very bereaved widow. She was John's first and only love. They married and had three children together, Patricia, John Jr. and Freddie. Helen, (John's wife), had a daughter, Brenda, from her first husband. She was very unhappy, especially when Mother List lived with them, and Helen knew how much her mother-in-law disapproved of her. Helen slowly began to lose her health and her mind due to syphilis of the brain. In this book, she is portrayed as a pretty much worthless person, bad wife and mother. But the woman was very ill. John would mow his lawn in a suit and necktie. An extremely eccentric man, his neighbors soon learned to just let them alone. He was a veteran of World War 2 and Korea, he was highly educated and intelligent. But he lost job after job, because of his inability to have relationships with people, he was truly a "cold fish", almost a robot. When they bought an old mansion in Westfield, N.J., (with the help of his mother's money), he continued to get fired from his jobs. He held the position of vice-president of a major New Jersey bank for a while, but lost that too. Faced with three teen-agers in the age of Aquarius he felt he had lost all control, and control was something John List had to have. He couldn't control his wife, who was going insane, he couldn't control his 16-year-old daughter, who was taking acting lessons, dressing as a hippie and embracing the occult, and he had gone through all his mother's considerable amount of money, (she was living on the third floor of the dilapidated mansion),he came to the conclusion that to save them all from the certain entrance to eternal hell, he made a plan and kept it. He shot his wife in the head in the kitchen as she drank her morning coffee. Then he went upstairs and shot his 85-year-old mother. As his children returned home from school, one by one, he executed them as well. He was very methodic, made extrodinary plans, such as having the mail and newspaper stopped, sent notes to the kid's schools claiming they would be out of state for a while, left lights burning in the house, and after placing the bodies of his wife and children on sleeping bags in the ballroom, YES, ballroom, he found his mother too heavy to move, so he left her upstairs where he shot her. He turned on macabre funeral music and got in his car and disappeared. He left letters for family members, friends and his pastor, to whom he confessed his crime, stating that it was God's will.The five bodies lay decaying for nearly a month before they were found. The neighbors noticed the lights flickering and going out one by one. Finally family friends checked on them and called the police. The man remained free for 18 years, remarried and took on a new identity, "Robert Clark". Thanks to John Walsh and the TV show "America's Most Wanted", and the extrordinary talent of forensic artist Frank Bender, who constructed a clay bust of what he thought John List would look like 18 years after the crime, a neighbor realized who he was, and he was finally arrested and given a life sentence for his heinous crimes. Incidentally, I'm 51 years old now, and if Patricia's father hadn't murdered her when she was sixteen, she too would be 51.

Ever wonder what is it that creates a monster? Genes? Environment? Life situations? This book presents arguments on many sides in an attempt to come up with an answer.

This is the true story of John List, who, in 1971, methodically, coldly and with great exacting premeditation killed his entire family, suited their bodies into sleeping bags and then lined these up in a row on his ballroom floor, turned the radio on high to a religious station and then fled his New Jersey home. No one missed the kids at school -- he'd taken the precaution of alerting their schools that they'd be out of state for a while. No one saw mail piling up outside the front door -- he'd stopped all mail delivery. The bodies lay decaying on that floor with only the neighbors questioning the eerie music emanating from the house at all hours and the lights within flickering and going out one by one over a period of an entire MONTH. In a month's time, there's a lot of hiding someone can do. John List eluded capture for eighteen years and were it not for the popular TV series AMERICA'S MOST WANTED that ran a piece on him, he might never have been found.

List was OCD and it was the pattern of perfectionism and inflexibility that drove him to be excessively moralistic, intractable, scrupulous and judgmental of others. He was a religious zealot raised in a dysfunctional household with an upbringing that caused him to seek and maintain a manic control over everything and everyone. Add to this brew, an inability to relate to people and job instability thereof so repeated unemployment, financial woes and stress of not being able to provide for his family and you see a man at odds with himself and the world. He was viewed an eccentric even by his neighbors and left alone.

He married a woman suffering from syphilis she contracted from her former husband and had three children with her. The wife was domineering and strong willed and butted heads with List's mom who ultimately came to live with them to help out financially. There was always tension between the two women and John resented it. He resented that his wife didn't do more around the house, despite that she was sickly. He felt overwhelmed with obligation and despair. By 1971, his wife's syphilis was in her brain and she was suffering irreversible brain damage.

John List felt trapped in a life that he saw as hopeless. He believed ruin was only a few weeks away with a mortgage due, bills he couldn't pay, no money in the bank and a family he felt was falling apart. His children were teenagers with independent minds that were straying from their strict religious upbringing. List had gone through all his mother's savings and there was no hope of salvation. He considered suicide but as a Lutheran, suicide was not an option so he devised to murder his entire family to save them from financial and moral ruin. This way, they'd all go to heaven and be saved the impending suffering he perceived for them on earth. He reasoned he might meet them in heaven this way at a later time.

While John List thought at any moment he'd be recognized by someone, it never happened. He grew a moustache, he laid low. He made sure he didn't get something as innocuous as a parking ticket. He didn't leave the country because he'd need a passport with a birth certificate. He never took a job that would require fingerprints. Nothing to draw attention to himself. He studiously blended in, folding himself into the very fabric of the country and got lost.

It's an amazing read. List settled in Virginia, eventually remarried and took on a new identity as Bob Clark, mild mannered accountant. Were it not for John Walsh and his popular show AMERICA's MOST WANTED and a forensic artist's dead-on clay bust interpretation of what John List probably looked like, he might never have been captured.

What I most like about the book is that the author, Mary Ryzuk, gives us reconstructed dialog from the courtroom, from former List friends and associates. Step by step actions and dialog as the FBI are closing in on him allows a feeling for the moment, to be on the hunt as he was finally apprehended. While obviously certain liberties are taken (she wasn't inside their heads as they thought, she couldn't be present for private conversations, naturally), the crime was carefully reconstructed based on all physical evidence and interviews with everyone concerned. Mary said not one incident portrayed in her book did not have the authenticity of events as remembered by people who lived through them and/or knew the List family personally.Thou Shalt Not Kill

In my opinion the best book on the subject of John List.
Many people become authors without really being writers (e.g. Ann Rule) but Mary IS a writer -- you either have it or you don't -- and she has injected a sense of drama into this account. So although we know that she could not have been present for certain conversations, etc. it's clear where the literary license begins and ends -- and she makes the story, interesting, readable and exciting. She doesn't merely tabulate events she injects them with presence and drama which in reality they contained. So her musing is true in a sense.
You'll enjoy the book.

Really Useful Book!

The first edition of this book is wonderful, full of very precise vocabulary that is instantly applicable. The concept of integration is often talked about, but Michael Lugering has created a functional process to achieve it! This technique works the body/voice/mind while exploring the expressive moment, as a painter explores brush strokes. Plenty of solo exercises and great text. Pure genius!

Which is fine, except when they scaled the book down they ...

I found this book in the library of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and ordered it immediately. Apparently the edition in the library was the original, not revised, version, which was about twice as large as this one.

Which is fine, except when they scaled the book down they just shrunk the page layout without actually revising anything. The text has become microscopic and hard to read, and the illustrations have become muddy messes. There are printing problems here and there where the markup language is still in the text so you get "See Fig 4.3 ." and no actual figure.

While the book itself starts out very basic (like elementary school basic on terms like shape and color), each lesson is rated for difficulty and the stuff around levels 3-7 is a great quick primer for non-architects to discover how architects think. I suspect the general history of architecture section would be really great if the illustrations of the buildings were their original size.

Buyers-- if you can find the original edition used then grab it (Amazon doesn't seem to sell it)

Mr. Winters, please find yourself a new publisher and do a "restored" edition.

Students of architecture today do not know the meaning of the Modern Architecture, this elementary book helps them understand the spatial conquest made by humanity from the cave to the lightest eco-buildings.
