Marjorie was my close friend. I spoke with her as she wrote this book and showed me her photos. It is tragic that she died young of cancer. Just before she died she was able to meet with Nisa one last time. Her friends finished her second book: Nisa Revisited. I highly recommend both accounts of the life of Kung women in the Kalahari Desert.

78 short workouts

The basic idea of this book is to work the body in about 15 minutes.

Here's how you do it. You focus on a few key exercises and move quickly from one exercise to another, with mininal rest time between exercises. Then, you repeat the exercises in a circuit, again with minimal rest.

These workouts work on increasing strength, by building muscle and strong bones, thus burning more fat. These workouts emphasize getting a lean strong body, rather than bodybuilding, and is, therefore, not a general bodybuilding book.

In the number and variety of workouts, this book is excellent. It contains 78 workouts, all 15-minutes long. Some workouts are bodyweight or require dumbbells. Others use a pull-up bar, a barbell, a kettlebell, a medicine ball, a stability (Swiss or large) ball, an exercise band (tubing), a foam roller, a jump rope, a BOSU, a bench, a cable machine, a step, and so on.

Instruction and exercises for each of the workouts vary, but in general, one may do a circuit of 3 to 7 relatively intense exercises, with little or no rest between each exercise. Then, rest for 60 between each circuit. Finally, repeat 2 more circuits.

All exercise photos are large and in color, clearly showing their positions, with descriptions.

I totally agree with the philosophy of this book and have found short, intense workouts to be MUCH more effective in building muscle and burning fat than long, drawn-out gym sessions. (The saved time is quite a plus too.)

This book gives some great circuit routines that will get your heart pumping and your muscles working. There are gym-free total body workouts, which also are great cardio; dumbbell workouts for your upper and lower body; barbell workouts meant to build maximum muscle mass; ab workouts; cardio routines; and more.

I've already tried several of the workout and was surprised at how challenging they were! This book doesn't disappoint!

P.S. I also highly recommend Bigger Leaner Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body (The Build Healthy Muscle Series) because it straightened out a bunch of confusions I had about how to build muscle, lose fat, and be healthy. I was making quite a few mistakes and didn't even know it!

Awesome fat burning excercises... sparing you some free time!!

As a young father, my Wife and I do not have much spare time anymore to exercise nor do outdoor trips (hiking, mountain biking,etc.).
We felt very sad about that.
This book of optimized exercises helped us being motivated again by gaining results as impressive as if we were training 3 times longer !!
But don't imagine these are miracle recipes... the basis is that you don't lose time resting between the workouts, so the 15mn are very, I mean very efficient...
Results do come fast and after 2 weeks (training 1 day out of 2, as suggested in the book), I am already feeling my abs recovering their former strentgh, more durably than before. Needless to talk about the thighs and arms and shoulders...
The workouts in this book won't help you build "big" muscles, but they will help you gain EFFICIENT muscles, EFICIENT strength, and endurance.
You just have to complete your weekly workout by one "HIIT" (High Intensity Interval Training), ideally outdoor (in my case: skysurfing/paddling : ) ) and you're done.
And the main benefit is that you have... more spare time to rest between the daily workouts and after each day's workout !
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for awesome (and motivating because of the variety!!) workouts, especially if they don't want to spend hours excercises because of her/his busy lifestyle !

Great Book for Part-Time Programmers

Firstly, this book covers Fortran 90 and 95 in great detail, offering many helpful suggestions to those who are used to older versions of Fortran, such as Fortran 77, and highlighting the differences between the 90 and 95 versions. Where this book shines is in the hundreds of examples of and bits of advice on good programming practice spread throughout the book. It's specifically tailored to those "part-time" programmers, scientists and engineers who do not come from a computer science or software engineering background. Most current (and new) Fortran programmers would benefit greatly by learning the programming style found here. I can't agree with all the advice, however, such as abandoning the basic "real" and "double precision" data types in favor of the new "kind" parameterized types. Still, the philosophy behind such advice is sound, and good programmers will know when and when not to use specific language features. One subject unfortunately missing from the book is programming for parallel processors, and other techniques to speed programs up. But most Fortran programmers don't need to worry about this subject and those who do can get O'Reilly's "High Performance Computing" and Jon Bentley's "Writing Efficient Programs". The examples and quizzes within, and the exercises at the end of, each chapter make this a great textbook. The appendices and index make it useful as a reference book. If you program in Fortran 90 or 95, I'd say this book is a must-have.

A beginner's review...

I am new to programming. I somehow missed picking up any language as an undergraduate and by the time I became a graduate student in physics I knew I needed to pick one up fast. I've tried many books but I just can't get through them. I usually don't make it past the 2nd chapter. There are many reasons for this but mostly the authors do not have enough examples and they tend to go off on tangents that detract from the lesson at hand. Recently I began a research project that used a ton of Fortran 90 legacy code and so I decided that I needed to try again. I got this book about a week ago and I am finishing chapter 5 at the moment. This book is great for learning how to program. It cuts right to the meat and gives well explained examples and quizzes throughout the book. I worked the examples and quizzes and a few problems from the end of the chapter after reading through it. If you are looking for a reference this probably isn't it. If, however, you are a beginner like me looking to learn how to program in Fortran 90/95 this is your book.

Great to learn Fortran

I have been using this text to learn Fortran 90/95. I have used Matlab significantly and understand very minimal C++. I find this book very useful and informative. It outlines programing pitfalls and tips for good programming practices. The examples are very easy to follow and the index is very usable. I would say this is a good book if you are just learning Fortran. Another thing I like about it is the fact that it has a chapter discussing older Fortran practices and the new/ modified commands. I have been using that section a lot to update an old Fortran 77 program I have. Overall it was well worth the $60 or so that I paid. There may be other references that are available online for free, but I like that I can highlight and write in a text, so I prefer printed material to online material.

The Raj as family history

The author has chosen to recount the coming about of the British Raj using the lens of family history. It is an interesting approach, for it gives depth to historical events we would otherwise skim over. Nothing is better than human color and detail for getting a handle on many angles of the period. The interest seldom flags, and one is drawn along with the narrative flowing as a majestic river.

The book is at its best when it retells the relentless march of British greed, gobbling up everything in its path. The author is clear-headed about it. Some of the rulers were petty despots, profligate, effete, and often plain dumb. Nevertheless, the way they were brings no credit to the perpetrators. There is no indication that British rule made much difference to the peasants in the fields. On the contrary: the old system, meretricious as it was, allowed for ambiguities and accommodation. It was elastic. British rule may have been just, but it was unduly harsh, unbending, and blind to the realities on the ground. It does not surprise that most famines in India took place during the period of British paramountcy.

The chosen approach has drawbacks, however. Where the family record is silent, the author either remains mute or needs to interpolate from sometimes a skewed angle. The “Mutiny” here is not presented here in full: there are aspects of it that are highlighted, others are ignored – it is all a bit haphazard. It is also regrettable that the heroes of the book lost their personal voice as the tragedy unfolded. Though they were present, and wrote policy papers, we do not know what they privately thought of it.

Chapter XVIII is an attempt to see the “Mutiny” in historical perspective. This is the highlight of the book, and well worth studying. The view is balanced, and the case the author makes is plausible, nay convincing. India as a whole, not just sepoys, rebelled against British overbearance. It was a war of independencebthe Indians lost. The only aspect one misses is the increasing and interconnected role of missionaries and spouses from the UKv at the time of the events. Their attempt rashly to acculturate India to British imperial standards contributed much to the rebellion.

While for sheer reading excitement Forsyth has yet to top his fiction debut, Day of the Jackal, published a quarter century ago, his later novels (The Fist of God, etc.) display a mature mastery of storytelling melded with a deep knowledge of realpolitik. Here, contemporary Russian crypto-fascists prove every bit as villainous as their Communist predecessors whom Forsyth portrayed in The Fourth Protocol and The Deceiver. It's 1999, and ultra-nationalist Igor Komarov's victory in the upcoming Russian presidential election seems assured. But within Komarov's party headquarters, an elderly janitor accidentally discovers Komarov's secret plans for Russia, laid out in a document that comes to be known as the Black Manifesto?a blueprint for a return to dictatorship, military expansionism and genocidal ethnic cleansing. The manifesto soon comes to the attention of British intelligence, but both they and the CIA are restrained by their governments from taking official action. So with the backing of an organization of international VIPs, former British Secret Service chief Sir Nigel Irvine mounts his own covert operation to subvert Komarov. Ex-CIA operative Jason Monk, who once ran highly placed agents in the Soviet Union, will be Irvine's point man. As usual, Forsyth interweaves speculation with historical fact, stitching his plot pieces with a cogent analysis of both Russian politics and the world of espionage?particularly the legacy of the real-life Aldrich Ames, a Soviet mole who tunneled deep into the CIA. YA. This complex spy novel opens in the summer of 1999 in a Russia on the brink of economic and political ruin as its elected President dies. Information leaks to the West indicating that his probable successor, Komarov, is a bigot who makes Hitler seem tame. Alternating sections take readers back to 1983 to give necessary background and introduce the hero, Jason Monk, before resuming the primary plot. Monk works for the CIA and has been hired to stop the election of Komarov. Many of his efforts are hampered by Aldrich Ames, a Russian spy who worked in the CIA and eliminated those who might have helped Monk in 1999. The use of actual political leaders and spies makes for an engaging blend of truth and fiction. In spite of the novel's length, Forsyth is adept at reviewing both past events and identifying characters within the plot while providing a good description of the problems of contemporary Russia. Even though readers know that Monk will be successful, the epilogue holds final, creative surprises. An intriguing story of espionage.?Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

Typical Forsyth style

I have all the works of this author and he never disappoints. This on was a slow starter but it did pick to a lively pace. Most of the time today I shop by name and reputation.

This story is alarming true in many places. Reads well and it is enjoyable even if it is not a rainy week end. Forsyth is constantly excellent.
