About the Author
John Wang, PhD, is cofounder, Chairman, and CEO of AbleSys Corporation. He cofounded AbleSys in 1994, and developed the Spyglass trading system in 1992, ASCTrend indicators in 1995, and the eASCTrend trading system in 2000. Wang began trading commodities in 1990 and is an active trader today, registered as a Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA) since 1995. His research has been published in top scientific journals, including "Chemical Physics Letters" and the "Journal of Physical Chemistry," among others.
Grace Wang is cofounder and Vice President of AbleSys. She received an MA in sports psychology from California State University, Sacramento, and an MA in physical education and gymnastics from Shanghai Institute of Physical Education. Wang became a CTA in 1995 and has been a frequent panel speaker at financial trade shows since 1999.

Save your money

As many others have said its basically an infomercial for their quite expensive software which I own and have had mixed results with. It will catch trends but more likely than not you will get stopped out the majority of the time then you have to make a decision to get back in or wonder if a sell signal is coming? When I bought the Ablsys program they offered free end of day data which they now charge $25/month for which is ridiculous. If you want an excellent trading platform for the price of free, open an ameritrade account and download think or swim (you get live intraday data in any timeframe for FREE, also forex and futures and no cost), I have been much more profitable than when using Ablesys.. Also Tradestation is another excellent platform for free if you are a frequent trader. In a nutshell AbleTrend is support/resistance trading with a moving average signal.

Good Trend Following Info: Great AbleTrend User's Guide

For 18 months I've been using (and consistently making money from) AbleTrend, primarily trading US equities, ETF's and options, long and short, using my personal variation of a swing/momentum style of short-term trading. Unfortunately I didn't have this book to help me understand how to best utilize the AbleTrend program, but now that I have read it my profitability has increased considerably due to my better understanding, and thus confidence, in the program and its trend following style. This book also helped me utilze more of the tools within the program and to expand and diversify my trading to some foreign exchanges and to Forex and futures. Even if you don't use AbleTrend this book covers some good fundamental info about trend following techniques and mindset, plus money management and testing, but the book is clearly most useful for AbleTrend users or those who might be considering using AbleTrend. For the past 17 years I've been a professional trader and for me it's of little consequence to know the Wang's algorithms and "secret recipe"... from my perspective, that's their hard-earned intellectual property and I don't really care `how the watch was made', only `what time it is': All I care about is `how do I make money' with it. The book certainly answers that question for a variety of styles and different securities and instruments. If you are not a current or prospective AbleTrend user, then this book may merit fewer stars from you... but for me, it has paid 5 star returns.

Interesting, but save your money....

Most of these reviews are commentaries on the Able Trend software, not the book. There is justification for that, since a significant portion of the book is a paean to the author's company's (AbleSys) trading software. Able Trend is a consistently highly-rated trading software, judging from Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities' annual 'readers'survey.'
The book itself is a mixed bag. The authors (the Wangs) emphasize a trading methodology focused on trend following and the 'tight' placement of 'stop loss orders.' 'Choppy' markets (trading ranges) should be avoided. The authors do not note that several option strategies are consistent with 'choppy' markets-- short puts and calls, short strangles, short straddles, etc. What they do note, however, is that no trading software can predict when a trend or a 'choppy' market will end. Hence, the emphasis on 'stop loss' orders under all market conditions.
A 'head scratcher' aspect of the book is the authors frequent quotations of some ancient Chinese sage, Lao-tzu. Indeed, they devote an entire chapter to this eminence's musings (chapter 4), 'Essential Philosophy of Trend Trading.' One doubts that Lao-tzu gave much thought to trend following trading techniques.
One of the more interesting and useful segments, early in the book, is Dr. Wang's critique of the principles underlying other trading software products. Able Trend is a user-friendly, 'do-what-the-software-says'- type product. Pretty much totally mechanical. Some trading platforms- eSignal and Trade Station come to mind- consist of dozens of technical 'indicators,' and elaborate charting techniques. The user has to interpret these market 'signals' by himself. Other products are hybrids- dozens of 'indicators' and charting capabilities but with a predictive function thrown in. AIQ Trading Expert Pro fits this description, as does Nirvana Systems' 'Omni Trader.' All of these products are exceptionally complicated, with huge learning curves.
No trading software is a panacea. Trading requires analytical capabilities and sound judgement. Able Trend's competing products are masterpieces of computer engineering design, but they are highly complicated. Able Trend has a $99 thirty day trial; if you are in the market for trading software, Able Trend is worth a look.
