Fantastic Guide to the Payment Processors world

You'd think that picking a payment processing company would be easy. I finally put the effort into learning how much we are really paying each day for our credit card processing... and what all these acronyms mean: SaaS, ACH etc. This book helped me pick out a great credit card processor and saves me money everyday.

Confusing and full of errors

I used this book as an undergrad and it was terrible. First, there must have been over 100 errors in the book. Second, the explainations of complicated principles were often incomplete. Third, the software that came with it was Fortran code that had to be compiled - if you don't have the write math libraries they won't work at all. If you are looking for a good chemical engineering thermo book, try Smith, Van Hess, and Abbott.

We just used this book in Chem Eng Thermo, and it explains things pretty well. I had Chem Thermo before, and that was mostly theory. The applications (machines, engines, etc) are the big thing in this book. It might help that I had Chem Thermo before. There are lots of good examples all worked out.

Finally, a thermo book you can actually read! Lots of worked examples, diagrams and tables of properties. This is the second book I've used for thermo, and now I think I actually inderstand it.

About the Author
Dr. Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Gitman is a prolific author who has more than 50 articles appearing in Financial Management, the Financial Review, the Journal of Financial Planning, the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the Financial Services Review, the Journal of Financial Research, Financial Practice and Education, the Journal of Financial Education, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. Authors Gitman and Joehnk's INVESTMENT FUNDAMENTALS: A GUIDE TO BECOMING A KNOWLEDGEABLE INVESTOR was selected as one of 1988's ten best personal finance books by Money magazine. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as Vice President--Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Carl McDaniel is professor emeritus in service at the University of Texas-Arlington. He currently holds courses for the executive MBA program on the Fort Worth campus and in China. He was the chairman of the marketing department at UTA for 32 years. McDaniel's career spanned more than 40 years, during which he was the recipient of several awards for outstanding teaching. McDaniel has also been a district sales manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and served as a board member of the North Texas Higher Education Authority, a billion-dollar financial institution. In addition to MKTG, McDaniel has written and co-authored over 50 textbooks in marketing and business. McDaniel's research has appeared in such publications as the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and California Management Review. McDaniel is a member of the American Marketing Association. In addition to his academic experience, McDaniel has business experience as the co-owner of a marketing research firm. McDaniel has also served as senior consultant to the International Trade Centre (ITC), Geneva, Switzerland. The ITC's mission is to help developing nations increase their exports. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas and his master's degree and doctorate from Arizona State University.

Overseas Edition

This is an oversees edition book if you look at the picture of the rear cover closely, it says "This edition authorized for sale in the Indian Sub-continent only" This was taped over when I received it, which is what made me suspicious. After going back and zooming in on the picture of the rear cover I saw this. I guess its my fault for not paying closer attention to this and the ISBN. But Maple_Leaf_Books should make this known in the description. They did however tell me they will give me a full refund of charges, I will update once I return it. I have no clue if this book is even close to the american edition or not, there is not even a page in the beginning that tells you a publication or copyright date. My drafting teacher at college recommended me this book and it is really excellent, very useful and complete. It is a must for any interior design or architecture student. The item I ordered came with a torn page (the upper corner was missing) and I contacted the seller immediately and told him about the problem. He apologized and give me a credit for 1/2 the price of the book, so he solved the issue. I am very satisfied and would order from him again.

A good distillation of some of the most important works on thinking and living well

Lawrence Enderson has obviously read many books. His choice of books, or at least the ones which to which he refers to in his writing of Pebbles of Perception are good books. From them he draws their essential teachings which he then packages for dissemination to the reader. He made a comment early on in the book about how he hopes that certain people, Sarah, Lawrence and Louise, will read this book. Perhaps those are his grandchildren. The book is purportedly intended to teach them (and us) how to make better choices. Enderson tries to show how few good choices make all the difference in life.

The problem is, a lot of his advice is not advice, but rather statements on the way things are. He does not tell me what to do, or why to do it. Most of the time he just describes the state of affairs as described by the books to which he refers. For example he describes how our brains work and how cognitive biases can affect our decisions. While we can infer from some of those descriptions of states of affairs on how better to conduct ourselves so that we do not succumb to our cognitive biases, he could've done a better job in telling us specifically what steps to take to overcome those biases. I don't know if he knows. It may be that these are just his musings and thoughts which he hopes that the reader will implement on their own.

It's a short book and many of the topics are very important but are given a very superficial treatment. For example, he talks about marriage in about seven pages. While he does say that marriage is the most important decision any person will make in their lives, he does not give enough weight to the effects that a choice of a partner can make in one's life. Nor does he give us tools or steps or questions to ask in order to help make that decision.

The single biggest criticism that I have for the book is that the three parts on which the book is based do not get support from their contents. The author says that curiosity character and choice are intertwined. Curiosity and character make for better choices. However, the author never shows how curiosity itself makes for better choices, nor does he show how character makes for good choices. Finally in the third part, the author talks about choices. The choices that he talks about include who to marry, where to live, what job to take, weather to have children, and so on, all major life choices. However he does not show how curiosity and character provide for the resolution of these complex and important choices. Each choice is treated as a separate chapter and distinct from the others. It's like the author took some notes on each of the subject and bound his notes together into a book.

The author's original artwork aroused my curiosity. As another reviewer mentioned, it is cryptic, and makes the reader think: what is he getting at with this depiction? The bearded gentleman in the artwork is a depiction of the author which I found touching and intriguing. I admire the author's undertaking to compile his wisdom for his future generations. I think if this book is looked at more like a book carrying what the author has learned on through to future generations in his family, it is a good book.

The author has created a book which compiles the essential elements of many of the important writings of the last century. Specifically, the author has distilled these works into a selection of important life "bullet points": factors and choices that will have a large impact on a person's life. And a description of them and sometimes even a way to resolve them has been borrowed or influenced by the important writers of the author's life. For somebody who will not read all the books to which the author refers, this book provides a quick, and punchy way to access the knowledge of some of the better thinkers and writers of the last century.

It does a great job of making you look at situations we all ...

Common sense is not as common as you would think, but this book is full of the stuff. It does a great job of making you look at situations we all face at different stages of our lives thru a different lens. Why do incentives result in unexpected outcomes; how many people count you as a WARM friend; why experiences trump things every time. The answers are not in the book, it just helps you understand the questions. Great read !

this book offers a quick roundup of thinking and writing on making better choices. Nice references to make it a starting point for wider exploration. it could be improved if the author infuses some personal experiences around each chapter - otherwise it comes across as a cliff notes on each topic.

hot monster mashup!

Wasn't sure what to expect with this and came away pleasantly surprised. Good writing, fun story, and some steamy sex scenes for sure. What I liked best was every time it started going toward Beauty & the beast territory it moved away to something different. Centaurs! The main character Callie is your typical "everywoman" type but not in a bad way. Got a kick out of it and I have the next one waiting for me already.

This is a book that will make you leave everything else at your door. It deals with some things that some people won't like.

Callie Shaw is just at a party and the next thing she knows the Lion God has awaken and taken her. What happens to her is out of this world. Some is things she likes and others are against her will. I liked how the storyline went and can't wait to read the rest in the series.
