Excellent story and why animal shelters need our help!

I thought Buster's Law was about a dog who ruled an animal shelter. Not so. Buster's Law was enacted in 1999 in New York, making cruelty to a pet a felony. I learned quite a bit about shelters. I had heard about "no kill" shelters. What I didn't realize was that this type of shelter is limited to how many animals it can take, and subsequently, may accept only the adoptable ones.
This is about the "open" Mercy Animal Shelter and its dependency on staff, volunteers, veterinary services, and public goodwill. It's told in journal form over a period of six weeks by Lucy Rios, the interim director. You'll read about the daily routines, the caregivers, the trials of dealing with people who decide they no longer want their pet, the triumphs when an animal is adopted, what Lucy is willing to do to avoid euthanasia of an adoptable animal, and the terror campaign against the shelter. You will love Lucy, she's a feisty, no-nonsense woman who cares equally for her staff and the residents of Mercy, be they feathered or furred.
There are a few contextual errors (ie: policy instead of police, bazaar instead of bizarre). The format is good and includes an active TOC (by chapter numbers not headings). I couldn't set this aside; I just had to know what came next. A definite keeper!

A behind-the-scenes, blunt look at animal shelters

As a former SPCA employee, I found "Buster's Law" to be extremely upfront about the day-to-day operations of an animal shelter. That in itself should make this a must-read for those who think it's so 'easy-peasy' to work with abandoned pets as it is a job that constantly tugs at the heartstrings.
As an ardent animal advocate, I stood side-by-side with Lucy every step of the way (except for TNR, which I'm still on the fence about). Yet, when it came to pitbulls and/or those who turn in elderly animals, I absolutely agreed with her viewpoint.
As an author and editor, I think the story line was good but the book did need some corrections. Also, the ending - albeit happy - was a bit abrupt for my tastes.
Overall, I give "Buster's Law" a solid four stars and kudos for telling it like it is.

Buster's Law

This is a really good story about a shelter and the people who work in it. You really feel for the woman who is in charge of it - I feel for all the animal shelters that do their best to make ends meet. I didn't guess the 'baddie'. The author writes about the animals in her charge, as well as the people who work for her. This is a really good story. Be prepared for laughter, tears and heart racing moments. There's quite a few really good 'cat' stories out there at the moment - try 'A Streetcat Named Bob' and the follow up book and 'Making Rounds with Oscar' to name a few. My first favorite cat book I read a few years ago was 'Dewey' (which I really recommend). Dewey and A Streetcat Named Bob would probably be my most favorites because they're actually true. Making the Rounds with Oscar is also a true story and well worth the read. God bless ALL animals and the people who are passionate about them! xo xo xo xo xo xo
