Excerpt:

A machete strapped to his back, a semiautomatic slung over his shoulder, and an army knife on his belt, he walked into the cantina with a swagger that said he could beat any man in town and could take any woman to bed.

He was taller than the locals, his hair a few shades lighter, a couple of days' worth of bristle covering the lower half of his face. He wore army boots, cargo pants, and a black T-shirt that did nothing to conceal a distracting amount of muscle.

Then he finally slid off his glasses, and the next second his unerring gaze pinned Clara, and it was too late to turn away or slide down in her chair, because he'd caught her watching him.

He gave a knowing smirk as he sauntered toward her, over six feet of pure muscle and laser-focused attention.

He dropped into the chair across from Clara, his muscled thighs spread. She clamped her own thighs together. His white teeth flashed in the dim light of the cantina as he chomped on his cigar and took stock of her.

"Are you lost, Cupcake?" His I'm-a-bad-boy-and-you-know-it voice scraped along her nerve endings.

Her grandmother used to say there were men the devil put on earth to test good women. Clara was tempted to ask the guy whether he'd just zip-lined in from hell.

"Go away," she said instead.

"How can I, when your eyes begged me to come over?"

She rolled said eyes so hard, she might have caused permanent damage.

One: she hadn't begged in her life.

Two: the only thing she wanted was to hit him over the head with the bottle of tequila between them on the table. She was trying to keep a low profile, and he was drawing every eye to them.

He smiled around his cigar. "What's your name?"

DOD Investigator Clara Roberts, she badly wanted to say to wipe the superior smirk off his face. "None of your business."

His eyes were a brilliant multicolor green like the rainforest, alive and full of secrets. He let his gaze travel over her chest from left to right, then from right to left with undisguised disappointment.

He tsked. "No tits, no manners." He shook his head. "You should try to have at least one or the other. A pair of great tits covers a multitude of sins."

When his gaze reached hers again, the very fires of hell glinting in his eyes, he said magnanimously, "Don't worry about it, Cupcake. You look like the brainy type. Believe it or not, that appeals to some men. I think I read that on the Internet."

Wanted to love it but couldn't
By Chitown Reader
I was so excited that find a new book by Ms. Marton but I'm in the minority that really didn't like this one. The hero, Light, delivers some pretty cutting remarks to Clara early in the book and while he largely redeems himself I just couldn't enjoy this couple. Clara is in a really bad situation/environment but insists on asking unintelligent questions and doing illogical things. Don't get me wrong, she's not stupid but she's oblivious to being completely out of her element and endangers herself and others. I appreciate that Ms. Marton takes the time to explain Clara's thought processes but she still does things that don't use the intelligence that she clearly has. Others have summarized the plot so I won't repeat it. I appreciate this author's talent but this book is not even close to her normal standard. We all get an opinion and this, respectfully, is mine. I'll definitely read her again but this book is an aberration imho.

The right mix of combustible materials...
By Karli
In my opinion, this is the best Dana Marton romantic suspense yet. It's no wonder that it's a 2016 RITA Award Winner. As the second book in the Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit, it is also a great standalone with an HEA. I absolutely loved it, as I did book one, and can't wait for the next book in the series.
Light Walker is a man obsessed. A former Navy SEAL, he now works as a mercenary in Mexico, with a long game of finding and killing the man who murdered his younger brother, Ben. The DOD did him a favor along the way, however, and they've just called it in.
Former forensic accountant Clara Roberts is a DOD Civilian Personnel Recovery Unit Investigator finishing up a job in Mexico when she gets a call from her father, retired General Roberts, the head of the CPRU. He tasks her with another recovery, this one off the books. After telling her who and why, Clara is shaken, but on board. There won't be an official liaison, though, so her father arranges for a private one. But when he's three days late for their rendezvous, Clara decides to proceed without him. Which is why Walker finds her in the local cantina being strong armed by Pedro, the corrupt human trafficking head of the local police. After Walker permanently takes care of Pedro, they escape into the jungle, running from Pedro's men, and Walker begins his campaign of 'encouraging' Clara to go home. But Clara is tougher than she looks and she's determined she's not leaving Mexico without her target. Walker's game is in play, though, and if he can't get her to leave, he'll have to find a way to keep her alive.

Enjoyable
By rnj1
I really enjoyed reading Flash Fire. Claire is the type of heroine I like, unshakeable, logical, with vulnerability. Walker is the type of hero I like, tough, Alpha, with a buried conscience. The vendetta Walker was on made sense and definitely moved the story forward. And Claire's mission was also well motivated.

I had to really suspend my disbelief when Claire's only thought was bringing her Glock to Brunhilda. Although I realize being who she was, organized and frugal, she wanted the gun to go to Walker, but since she was trying to get out of the country, she simply could have hidden it and left. And then, the entire reason why SHE had to be the one to rescue Rosita should have been addressed. Ms. Marton should have written the scene where Claire and her father talked and she revealed what Rosita had told her. It would have also been nice to learn what the outcome was to Rosita's cousin and aunt. It was a major piece of the plot.

Otherwise, it was a fun ride.
