Silken Prey, by John Sandford

The extraordinary new Lucas Davenport thriller from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner.

“If you haven’t read Sandford yet, you have been missing one of the great summer-read novelists of all time.”—Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly

Murder, scandal, political espionage, and an extremely dangerous woman. Lucas Davenport’s going to be lucky to get out of this one alive.

Very early one morning, a Minnesota political fixer answers his doorbell. The next thing he knows, he’s waking up on the floor of a moving car, lying on a plastic sheet, his body wet with blood. When the car stops, a voice says, “Hey, I think he’s breathing,” and another voice says, “Yeah? Give me the bat.” And that’s the last thing he knows.

Davenport is investigating another case when the trail leads to the man’s disappearance, then—very troublingly—to the Minneapolis police department, then—most troublingly of all—to a woman who could give Machiavelli lessons. She has very definite ideas about the way the world should work, and the money, ruthlessness, and sheer will to make it happen.

No matter who gets in the way.

Filled with John Sandford’s trademark razor-sharp plotting and some of the best characters in suspense fiction, Silken Prey  is further evidence for why the Cleveland Plain Dealer called the Davenport novels “a perfect series,” and Suspense Magazine wrote, “If you haven’t read any of the Prey series, you need to jump on board right this second.”

Just a so-so Davenport novel.
By Linda R. Belair
I think this is the weakest Lucas Davenport novel in the the Prey series. Every year I look forward to a new Davenport and a new Flowers novel. I buy the audiobooks at great expense so I can easily store them for repeated use. I have laughed so hard sometimes my husband asks me what the heck I am listening to?

I liked bringing in Kidd and Lauren, but as others have said, thought the fact that they were willing to risk "their family life with their son " a bit ridiculous as well as it lead Davenport to find out things about Kidd and Lauren he hadn't known. I have to think this may be tied into a later storyline otherwise it was pointless and stupid.

His old pals like Shrake and Jensen and the other "hardened " Detectives Lucas works with didn't have as big a role in this book therefore the laughs and grins which usually accompany his work was almost missing. Most of the Prey series and the Flowers series are great books to listen to when I run out of new ones. This book will not be on my list of re-reads.

What Character(s)!
By Scott E. High
Based on the last three books I've read, it seems like everyone is jumping on the topics of political corruption and government abuse of power. John Grisham's THE RACKETEER and C.J. Box's BREAKING POINT both join John Sandford in throwing more wood on the fire that seems to be our evolving distrust of the federal government. However SILKEN PREY takes it down to the state level where dirty politics come into play. What's next, a book about corruption at the city and county level? Everyone who is knowledgeable of politics knows that manipulations at all levels of government probably began before Roman times. Authors just seem to be getting more aggressive about putting it in front of us.

I've always loved the characters in John Sandford's novels and appreciate it when he introduces and develops new players to his stories. All of them--except for the really bad actors--have this self-deprecating sense of humor that often makes me chuckle. One might say that drawing together such a like-minded cast is improbable, but I realize that my best friends share the same warped sense of humor that I have. What better way to spend a day than laughing with your friends?

So I continue to pick up some of John Sandford's books for light and entertaining reading, sort of like a palette cleansing before moving on to a more difficult author. I'm pretty sure that he'll continue to spin off some of his main characters into series' of their own. That's just fine with me. Just keep bringing on the laughs.

Murder in Minnesota - again!
By chb book addict
The Prey series is an absolute favorite with me and Lucas Davenport is one of my favorite characters, I've seen him go from detective to the BCA with his former chief. I like this job because of the variety and the authority that goes with it.

In this installment Lucas is called in by the governor to help clear a US Senator who is accused of having child porn on a computer in his campaign office. The governor says he didn't do it and with the election only days away, Lucas has to look into the situation and hopefully clear the Senator.

With his usual brash but introspective method he finds out that the Senator has been set up but that's just the beginning of the mess. The guy who did it has disappeared and the cast of suspects is growing.

The political twist is good, the fact that the people who are suspects are involved with the incumbent senator and his opponent is good, no one is above the law and Lucas is just the person to let them know it. His usual sidekicks are along for the ride and a few new cops are added to the mix.

Love this story and the ending set us up for more action with some of the characters. The one thing I didn't like was that the price dropped from $14.99 to $12.99 in a week. I will be holding back and waiting in the future. I don't need to be the first one to review a book to enjoy it.
